Objective: Hemidesmus indicus R. Br. (HI) (Indian sarsaparilla) is traditionally used in Indian medicine for human therapy. The present study was aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of HI root extracts, and its effects on delaying (or) management of cataract progression in streptozoticin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. Methods:The plant roots were extracted in different solvents, estimated total phenolic content, total flavonoid content and conducted free radical scavenging potential through 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2 azinobis (3-ethyl benzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid diammonium salt (ABTS) NO, OH and reducing power assays. Further, the protective effect was evaluated in STZ induced diabetic rats through administered of ethyl acetate extract of HI (200 and 400 mg/kg body weight) orally for 8 weeks to study its effect on oxidative stress and diabetic cataract progression. Results:In primary results demonstrated that the ethyl acetate extract has been showed considerable free radical scavenging activity and significantly gain body weight, gradual decreasing blood glucose levels and delay cataract progression has been observed in HI treated rats. Furthermore, we observed significantly decreased oxidative stress markers, and restoration of the antioxidant system in HI treated rats. Lens sections from experimental animal again evidenced to conform the ameliorative effect of HI on diabetic cataract. Conclusion:This obtained result's confirmed that the protective effect of HI is attributed to the antioxidant activities of plant roots and its active principles.

Abstract:In this research, the conditions for extraction of phenolics from leaves of Ficus virens were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). The extraction abilities of phenolics (EAP) and flavonoids (EAF), the 2,2-diphenyl-1-pierylhydrazyl (DPPH) free-radical scavenging potential, and the ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) were used as quality indicators. The results of single-factor experiments showed that temperature, ethanol concentration, extraction time, and the number of extraction cycles were the main influencing variables, and these provided key information for the central composite design. The results of RSM fitted well to a second degree polynomial model and more than 98% of the variability was explained. The ideal extraction conditions for EAP, EAF, DPPH free-radical scavenging potential, and FRAP were obtained. Considering the four quality indicators overall, the ideal extraction conditions were 58% ethanol at 57 °C for 37 min with three extraction cycles. At the ideal extraction conditions, the values of EAP, EAF, DPPH free-radical scavenging potential, and FRAP were 5.72%, 3.09%, 58.88 mg ascorbic acid equivalent (AAE)/g dry weight (DW), and 15.86 mg AAE/g DW, respectively. In addition, linear correlations were observed between EAP, EAF, and antioxidant potential.

This review examines the chemical compositions and bioactivities of mangrove plants belonging to the Rhizophoraceae family. The Rhizophoraceae family of true mangrove plants is the most common and is also widely distributed species. It consists of 24 species across four genera. Of the 24 species, 12 species remain unexamined for their phytochemical constituents. There have been 268 metabolites reported from 16 species. The key phytochemical constituents identified across the family are the diterpenoids and triterpenoids. The major diterpenoids include pimaranes, beyeranes, kaurenes, dolabranes and labdanes whereas the significant triterpenoids are lupanes, dammaranes and oleananes. Disulphides, dolabranes and labdanes are considered to be the chemotaxonomic markers of the genera Bruguiera, Ceriops and Rhizophora respectively.
