Antioxidant activity and growth inhibition of human colon cancer cells by crude and purified fucoidan preparations extracted from Sargassum cristaefolium

Abstract: Fucose-containing sulfated polysaccharides, also termed "fucoidans", which are known to possess antioxidant, anticoagulant, anticancer, antiviral, and immunomodulating properties, are normally isolated from brown algae via various extraction techniques. In the present study, two methods (SC1 and SC2) for isolation of fucoidan from Sargassum cristaefolium were compared, with regard to the extraction yields, antioxidant activity, and inhibition of growth of human colon cancer cells exhibited by the respective ex… Show more

“…using the method described previously [28,34]. In brief, 50 l of mango peel extract (concentrations ranging from 0 to 300 g/ml for Tainoung number 1 and Haden cultivars; 0-600 g/ml for Jinhwang and Tu cultivars; and 0-900 g/ml for Irwin and Yuwen cultivars) was added to 200 l 0.1 mM DPPH solution (in methanol).…”

“…Alternatively, different processing methods are also important factors that influence the molecular conformational changes. Purified fucoidan preparation (PFP) has a higher cytotoxic effect due to the higher sulfate content compared with crude fucoidan preparation (CFP) [26]. Lowering the molecular weights (Mw) of fucoidan enhanced the anti-tumor activities by improving the binding properties of sulfate groups [27].…”

“…One study employed the complex of fucoidan (Fu) and synthetic rutin (Ru) in anticancer therapy. Treatment with the Ru-Fu complex, which has no adverse effects on normal cells, resulted in disruption of cell cycle regulation and apoptosis via nuclear fragmentation, production of ROS, and induction of mitochondrial damage (41). Another study synthesized fucoidan-coated copper sulfide nanoparticles (F-CuS) as a candidate in chemo-photothermal cancer therapy.…”
