Antioxidant activity and phenolic contents of Olea europaea L. leaves sprayed with different copper formulations

Abstract: Olive trees (Olea europaea L. Cv. Cobrançosa) from the northeast of Portugal were sprayed with three different copper formulations [bordeaux mixture (copper sulphate + calcium hydroxide À 20% Cu), copper hydroxide (40% Cu) and copper oxychloride (50% Cu)] to control olive fungal diseases. The residues of copper in olive leaves, harvested at different times, were evaluated by atomic absorption spectrometry. At all the collection times, treated olive leaves had significantly higher copper contents, compared to t… Show more

“…A direct relationship has been found between the content of total phenolics and the antioxidant capacity of plants (Ferreira et al, 2007). Phenolic acids have been widely investigated as potential models for the development of new primary antioxidants, which can prevent or delay in vitro and/or in vivo oxidation processes (Siquet et al, 2006).…”

“…Tocopherols and carotenoids improve oil stability and thus oils naturally rich in these constituents are preferred (Warner and Frankel, 1987;Frankel, 1991). Phenols can act as antioxidants and reduce the risk of cancer and cardiovascular diseases (Burton, 1994;Burton and Traber, 1990;Ferreira et al, 2007). Sterols are essential components of cell membranes that play a role in controlling membrane fluidity and permeability.…”

“…Cu + 2 can also be synthesized as Cu(OH) 2 NPs. In general, the toxicity of copper compounds has been exploited to protect agricultural crops from many pests, including those causing fungal infections (Montes et al, 2015;Kalatehjari et al, 2015;Bramhanwade et al, 2016;Epstein and Bassein, 2001;Begum et al, 2015;Fan et al, 2011;El-Habbaa et al, 2016;Wightwick et al, 2008;Stansly and Kostyk, 2015;Thind and Singh, 2015;Ferreira et al, 2007), and copper pesticides are now applied on some "organic" crops (Baker et al, 2002;Winter and Davis, 2006). Their use as an antimicrobial agent has also been considered in several applications (Emam et al, 2014;Shebl, 2014;Mjos et al, 2016;Congrádyová et al, 2014).…”

“…A direct relationship has been found between the content of total phenolics and antioxidant capacity of plants (Ferreira, Baptista, Vilas-Boas, & Barros, 2007;Robards et al, 1999). In fact, to counteract deleterious action of ROS, phenolic compounds, naturally distributed in plants, are effective (Ferreira, Barros, Soares, Bastos, & Pereira, 2007;Pereira et al, 2006). Polyphenols are bioactive compounds believed to be involved in the defence process against deleterious oxidative damage, at least in part, due to their antioxidant properties (Fresco, Borges, Diniz, & Marques, 2006).…”
