Antioxidant activity of noni juice in heavy smokers

Abstract: BackgroundNoni (Morinda citrifolia) juice has demonstrated antioxidant activity in vitro and in vivo. To evaluate this activity in humans, noni juice from Tahiti (TNJ) was evaluated in a 30 day, double-blind, and placebo controlled clinical trial with 285 current heavy smokers. Research participants were randomly assigned to three daily treatment groups: 118 mL placebo, 29.5 mL TNJ, and 118 mL TNJ. Plasma superoxide anion radicals (SAR) and lipid hydroperoxide (LOOH) levels were measured pre and post-intervent… Show more

“…Noni juice also contains a small percentage of grape juice (11%) to enhance palatability and could add or synergize with the noni juice. However, in a clinical trial using grape juice as a placebo, only noni puree resulted in the beneficial reduction of lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species (35). Therefore, the small percentage of other juices may not be responsible for the induction of osteogenesis in rat; however, as different outcomes were investigated, these juices may still have a partial role in osteogenesis.…”

“…Further, smoking history among current non-smokers has an impact, with skin autofluorescence being lower among those who have never smoked than among ex-smokers [135]. In heavy cigarette smokers, noni juice ingestion lowered plasma concentrations of superoxide anion radicals (SAR) and lipid hydroperoxides [136], as well as reduced lipid peroxidationderived DNA adducts [137]. The role of deacetylasperulosidic acid in the antioxidant activity of noni juice was demonstrated by its ability to increase superoxide dismutase and catalase activity in vivo [50].…”

“…The results of the estimation of serum biochemical markers and endogenous enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants data clearly revealed that NJ and DNG significantly reduced the nephrotoxic effect induced by CIS which is confirmed by histopathological study. Natural antioxidants have been broadly used for chemo protection assuming that they detoxify ROS and prevent untoward effects produced by antineoplastic agents and other toxicants [47]. Reported that NJ has a high antioxidant potential along with cytotoxic activity on cancer cells.…”
