Antioxidant Activity of the Sea Bird Nest (Eucheuma Cottonii) and Its Radical Scavenging Effect on Human Keratinocytes

Abstract: The potential of Eucheuma cottonii (EC) to be a novel source of antioxidants and protection against photoageing is increasingly evident but largely unexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity and radical scavenging capacity of EC extracts on human keratinocytes. Aqueous and methanol extracts from EC were evaluated in a series of in vitro assays on the HaCaT keratinocyte cell line. Antioxidant activity was determined via the DPPH assay, while MTT was used to evaluate the cytotoxicity of EC… Show more

“…Similarly, the vascular ROS, especially superoxide anion was elevated in aorta of db/db mice and aorta exposed to high glucose and HBN decreased the superoxide production in the high-glucose exposed tissues, indicating HBN protects against endothelial dysfunction by inhibiting ROS production. This is in agreement with previous researches that showed edible bird's nest ameliorated oxidative stress by reducing production of ROS in SH-SY5Y cells and human keratinocytes (Yew et al, 2014;Hou et al, 2015;Lim et al, 2015).…”

“…Cell viability between EC extract- and control-treated cells did not differ significantly. Seaweed extracts have been previously reported to be non-toxic to normal cells [ 47 ] and human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells [ 26 ].…”

“…The EC extract has shown antioxidant, anti-inflammation, and anti-cancer properties [ 26 , 27 , 59 , 60 ], and has previously been demonstrated to slow tumor cell growth rate [ 27 ], promote wound healing [ 28 ], and upregulate cancer cell apoptosis [ 29 ]. Moreover, extracts of this seaweed improved cardiovascular, liver, and metabolic parameters in obese rat models [ 30 ] and presented anti-diabetic effects in streptozotocin-induced type 2 diabetic mice [ 31 ].…”

“…In this procedure, 2,2-diphenyl-1-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay was performed based on procedure proposed by the previous work [25]. The stock solution of 1 M DPPH was prepared in methanol and kept at -20°C until analysis.…”
