Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Activity of Five Medicinal Mushrooms of the Genus Pleurotus

Abstract: Within the group of higher fungi, edible medicinal mushrooms have a long history of being used as food and in folk medicine. These species contain biologically active substances with many potential beneficial effects on human health. The Pleurotus genus is representative of medicinal mushrooms because Pleurotus ostreatus is one of the most commonly cultivated culinary mushrooms. In our study, we focused on lesser-known species in the genus Pleurotus and measured their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity… Show more

“…The normal redox intermediates in the CL of nanoparticulated luminophore , with KIO 4 -involved oxidations are reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as hydroxyl radicals (OH • ), singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), superoxide radical (O 2 • – ), etc. According to Figure D, CL of CdTe753/KIO 4 is quenched by 16.4%, 8.0%, and 94.8% upon introducing a single type of ROS scavenger into CdTe753 solution, such as histidine (scavenger of 1 O 2 ), MNT (scavengers of OH • ), , and NBT (scavengers of O 2 • – ). , The CL of CdTe753/KIO 4 is quenched by 99.9% upon introducing all three scavengers into the CdTe753 solution (Figure D, h), indicating that 1 O 2 , OH • , and O 2 • – are the predominant intermediates for the CL of CdTe753/KIO 4 .…”

“…Antioxidants with the ability to scavenge free radicals and reduce oxidative stress are reported to be consecrated with all types of pharmacological applications [ 41 ]. In recent years, the antioxidant substance obtained from mushrooms were discovered to confer a beneficial effect on human health, such as antidiabetic and antihyperglycemic [ 42 ], neuroprotective [ 43 ], hepatoprotective [ 44 ], anti-inflammatory [ 45 ], immunomodulatory [ 46 ], anti-aging [ 47 ], anticancer [ 48 ], antimicrobial [ 49 ], anti-melanogenic [ 50 ] and hypopigmentation [ 51 ], anticoagulant [ 52 ], nephroprotective [ 53 ], and hyperuricemia treatment [ 54 ], etc. The abundant natural antioxidants of M. importuna will lay the foundation for its medicinal benefits.…”

“…The ergothioneine concentration in different species of mushrooms has been found to be significantly different and to vary with physiological or environmental conditions [133][134][135]. Among the most popular mushrooms, those with the highest amounts of ERG include Pleurotus spp., [130,136,137], Lentinula edodes, Boletus edulis [134], and Agaricus bisporus [133]. A study carried out on locomotor frailty and cerebellum of aged mice orally supplemented for 2 months with a standardized extract obtained from the mushroom Hericium erinaceus demonstrated the neuroprotective effect of H. erinaceus metabolites in the prevention and treatment of age-related neurodegenerative diseases [138].…”
