The leaf of Solanum anomalum used in ethnomedicine for the treatment of various ailments such as diabetes was evaluated for antioxidative stress and hepatoprotective potentials against hepatic injuries in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Antioxidative stress and hepatoprotective activities of leaf extract and fractions (70-210 mg/kg) were assessed by determining oxidative stress markers levels, liver function indices and histopathological study of livers of treated rats. The leaf extract and fractions caused significant (p<0.05 – 0.001) increases in the levels of oxidative stress markers (SOD, CAT, GPx, GSH) in the livers of the treated diabetic rats. The extract/fractions treatment caused reduction in liver enzymes (ALT, AST and ALP), total and direct bilirubin. Histology of the livers revealed absence or significant reductions in pathological features in the treated diabetic rats compared to untreated diabetic rats. The results show that the leaf extract and fractions of S. anomalum has antioxidative stress and hepatoprotective potentials which may be due to the antioxidant activities of their phytochemical constituents.

Tapioca flour-based crackers are a popular dry snack in Indonesia, characterized by their high starch content. However, recent developments have focused on creating crackers that are not only tasty but also have high nutritional value. One way to achieve this is by fortifying crackers with fermented products like black glutinous rice tape. This ingredient is known for its excellent nutrition and high antioxidant content, making it a healthy addition to crackers. The expansion of the volume of crackers is the primary factor that affects the crispness and quality of the crackers. This study aims to determine the proportion of the addition of black glutinous rice tape and baking powder concentration to the characteristics of crackers and determine the best crackers that can produce good quality and are acceptable in terms of sensory. The research design was a randomized complete block design with two factors. The first factor of black glutinous rice tape percentage (20, 30, 40%) and the second factor of baking powder concentration (0.1, 0.2, 0.3%) repeated three times resulted in 27 attempts. The ANOVA two-way statistics was utilized by the researchers to evaluate the chemical data, followed by the Tukey test to detect any significant differences among the treatments. Moreover, they employed Friedman's method to carry out organoleptic testing. The Effectiveness Index method identified the best treatment for chemical and organoleptic analysis, which was T3B2 (0.2% baking powder and 40% black glutinous rice tape). This treatment resulted in an antioxidant activity of 141.15 ppm, a water content of 9.05%, and an ash content of 1.71%. In addition, the organoleptic scores for color, aroma, taste, and texture were rated 4.66, 4.66, 3.40, and 3.70, respectively (3=least liked, 4= liked).

Diarrhoea, characterized by increased frequency of stools (3 or more per 24 hrs), increased fluidity of stools and/or the presence of blood/mucus, affects people of any age, but is the third commonest disease in children in developing countries, and is responsible for about one third of all hospitalizations among children under five years. Research into drug treatment of diarrhoea, revealed that several species of Solanum are used in traditional medicine to treat diarrhoea. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate and possibly authenticate the antidiarrhoeal activity of ethanol extracts of S. anomalum leaves, as used in traditional medicine. The ethanol extract of S. anomalum leaves was evaluated to authenticate its antidiarrhoeal activity using rats. Ethanol extract at doses of 70, 140 and 210 mg/kg was checked for antidiarrhoeal effect using three models of small bowel transit time, castor oil induced diarrhoea, and castor oil induced accumulation of fluid. The leaf extract caused significant (p<.001) inhibition of small bowel transit time, castor oil induced diarrhoea, and castor oil induced fluid accumulation. In conclusion, the findings of this study show that the ethanol extract of S. anomalum leaves has antidiarrhoeal properties, therefore confirming its traditional use as medicine in the management of diarrhoeal disorders.
