Antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties of squeezed juice from black radish (Raphanus sativus l. var niger) root

Abstract: The in vitro antioxidant properties of squeezed juice from black radish root were investigated by spectrophotometry and luminometry. The sample exhibited strong hydrogen-donating ability, reducing power, copper(II)-chelating property and showed a radical scavenging effect in a H 2 O 2 / . OH-luminol system that points to significant participation in an antioxidant process. According to the HPLC analyses the main active compounds in the juice are not the glucosinolates but probably their degradation products fo… Show more

“…O teor de fenóis foi determinado pelo método espectrofotométrico de Folin-Ciocalteau (Lugasi et al, 1998;Oliveira et al, 2009) utilizando ácido gálico como padrão. Esse reagente consiste de mistura de cor amarela dos ácidos fosfomolibídico e fosfotungstico.…”

“…R. niger is a variety of black radish that has been used since antiquity in folk medicine as a natural remedy against many diseases (Bown, 1995;Chevallier, 1996). First cultivated and used by the Egyptians in 2780 BC, the black radish root juice has always shown significant antioxidant and therapeutic properties, and this is also reported in recent works (Lugasi et al, 1998(Lugasi et al, , 2005. The plant, containing the antibacterial and antifungal compound raphanin, inhibits the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Streptococci and Pneumococci.…”

“…Whereas the supercritical carbon dioxide fluid extraction offers the usage of non-toxic, nonexplosive, environmental friendly, cost effective, time saving and selectivity adjustable solvent (supercritical carbon dioxide fluid) in the extraction advantageously (Araújo & Sandi, 2007;Vaquero, Beltran, & Sanz, 2006). DPPH scavenging activity assay evaluates the hydrogen-donating ability of the chain-breaking antioxidants, the antioxidants that are capable to donate hydrogen to free radicals, leading to nontoxic species and therefore to inhibition of the propagation phase of lipid oxidation (Lugasi, Dworscha´, Bla´zovics & Ke´ry, 1998). The antioxidant activity of vanillin, in comparison to ovanillin as a scavenger of the DPPH + radical, has been studied previously Santosh-Kumar, Priyadarsini, & Sainis, 2002).…”
