This investigation was performed to assess the influences of the host-associated probiotic Bacillus altitudinis B61-34b (BAA) on growth, immune response and disease resistance to Streptococcus agalactiae in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Fish (25.50 ± 0.52 g fish −1 ) were distributed into 15 aquaria (150 litres tank −1 ) at density of 20 fish tank −1 . The fish were fed basal diets with BAA inclusions in different concentrations: 0 (BAA1-Control), 10 6 (BAA2), 10 7 (BAA3), 10 8 (BAA4) and 10 9 (BAA5) CFU ml −1 for 8 weeks. A completely randomized design with three replications was used. The results indicated that BAA administration generated greater (p < 0.05) skin mucus and peroxidase activities compared to the control, with maximum levels recorded in BAA4 and BAA5. Higher serum immunities, such as serum lysozyme, serum peroxidase, complement, phagocytosis and respiratory burst activities were observed in the BAA4 and BAA5 dietary groups compared to the control, BAA1, BAA2 and BAA3 diets. The relative percentage of survival, growth performance and FCR were also significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the BAA4 and BAA5 groups. In conclusion, dietary supplementation of B. altitudinis at 10 8 CFU ml −1 can improve Nile tilapia's growth performance, skin mucus and serum immunities, and disease resistance.

This study assessed the impact of dietary supplementation of single-and multi-strain Bacillus-based probiotics on growth performance, intestinal morphometry, blood parameters, immune-oxidative status and transcriptomic response of Nile tilapia for 60 days. Fish (N = 150, 1.632 ± 0.035 g) were allocated into five experimental groups:(1) Control group (CG) that was fed on a basal diet; (2) Eco. 0.01%, received basal diet with 0.1 g/kg Ecobiol; (3) Eco. 0.02%, received basal diet with 0.2 g/kg Ecobiol;(4) Pro-F FMC 0.001%, received basal diet with 0.001 g/kg Sanolife PRO-F FMC; (5) Pro-F FMC 0.002%, received basal diet with 0.002 g/kg Pro-F-FMC. Fish received Pro-F FMC 0.002% displayed higher growth performance than CG (p < 0.05), while Pro-F FMC 0.001% exhibited the highest intestinal weight. Sanolife PRO-F FMC supplementation improved intestinal villi length and goblet cell number while decreased inter-villi space (p < 0.05). The best haemoglobin, haematocrit and monocyte per cent were observed in Pro-F FMC 0.001%, whereas Pro-F FMC 0.002% revealed the best leukocyte, lymphocyte and neutrophil contents. Pro-F FMC-supplemented groups showed better phagocytic activity, phagocytic index and lysozyme activity than Ecobiol-supplemented groups and CG. Pro-F FMC 0.001% enrichment induced the highest upregulation level of NPYα, AgRp-2, ghrelin and GH-1, whereas Pro-F FMC 0.002% significantly upregulated IGF-1 and IGF-2 gene expression. Eco. 0.02% induced the highest upregulation level of orexin and galanin gene expression.Conclusively, dietary enrichment with single-or multi-strain Bacillus-based probiotics is likely to improve growth, immunological parameters and transcriptomic response of Nile tilapia.

Intensive aquaculture supports higher production per unit of area, but it may be associated by stress and health problems in fish. Thus, researches are continuing to find applicable methods for suppressing such negative effects. Dietary supplementation with medicinal plant is known as a promising method in this field. Accordingly, the present study aimed at assessing the benefits of dietary Artemisia, Artemisia annua, supplementation (0, 2.5, 5 and 10 g/kg) on growth performance, stress, antioxidant and immunological responses of common carp, Cyprinus carpio, held at a high stocking density (10 g/L vs. 3 g/L) for 70 days. Increase in fish stocking density significantly (p < 0.05) reduced growth performance, haematological parameters (red blood cell, haematocrit, haemoglobin, leukocyte and lymphocyte) and immune responses (total protein, complement and total immunoglobulin), but increased neutrophil, lysozyme, stress responses (cortisol, glucose, aspartate aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase), antioxidant enzymes’ activities (superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase) and lipid peroxidation. Artemisia supplementation significantly (p < 0.05) restored haematological parameters, leukocyte count and mitigated the changes in lymphocyte, neutrophil, stress and immunological parameters, antioxidant enzymes’ activities and lipid peroxidation. Based on the results, dietary Artemisia supplementation is not capable to restore growth retardation of common carp under high stocking density; however, it mitigates the adverse effects of high stocking density on haematological, antioxidant and immunological parameters. Supplementation at 5 g/kg is recommended for carp feed formulation.
