Antioxidant, anti-adipocyte differentiation, antitumor activity and anthelminticactivities against Anisakis simplex and Hymenolepis nana ofyakuchinone A from Alpinia oxyphylla

Abstract: BackgroundAlpinia oxyphylla is a common remedy in traditional Chinese medicine. Yakuchinone A is a major constituent of A. oxyphylla and exhibits anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antibacterial, and gastric protective activities.MethodsAntioxidant and antitumor characteristics of yakuchinone A in skin cancer cells as well as novel mechanisms for the inhibition of adipocyte differentiation, cestocidal activities against Hymenolepis nana adults, and nematocidal activities against Anisakis simplex larvae are investig… Show more

“…The active phenolic components yakuchinone A and yakuchinone B that exist in A. oxyphylla exert antiproliferative activity on mouse skin tumor and HL-60 cells, and have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capacity in vitro . (30) In addition, yakuchinone A exhibit anti-adipocyte differentiation capacity (31). The diarylheptanoids isolated from the fruits of A. oxyphylla have potent antioxidant activities in the DPPH assay (32) and eudesmane sesquiterpenes may inhibit nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide-induced and interferon-gamma-induced murine macrophages (14,33).…”

“…To our knowledge, the presence of the three compounds in E. calophrys was reported for the first time in the present work. Compound 1, classified as a diarylheptanoid was first reported from the fruits of Alpinia oxyphylla (Zingiberaceae) [30]. The presence of this compound in E. calophrys is considered unique since its occurrence in other investigated Etlingera species has not been recorded.…”
