Antioxidant, Anticancer, Antibacterial, Antibiofilm Properties and Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Analysis of Manuka Honey: A Nature’s Bioactive Honey

Abstract: Honey has a history of medical use and is known as bio-alternative therapy. This research assessed the phytochemical and biological activity of the medical grade manuka honey (MH). Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) was chosen to investigate bioactive compounds of the MH. The DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging and beta-carotene antioxidant activities as well as the antibacterial and antibiofilm effects against S. aureus, B. subtilis, E. coli and P. aeruginosa were all determined. Furthermore, to g… Show more

“…Plates were incubated at 37 °C, 5% CO 2 , overnight to investigate any possible cytopathic effects of treated cells. A solution of 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) (MTT) was prepared using phosphate buffered saline (PBS) as a solvent (5 mg/mL) [ 24 ]; then 20 µL of the prepared solution was added into each well, followed by well-mixing of prepared solution with the used medium through a shaking table at 150 rpm for 5 min [ 25 ]. The well plates were incubated at 37 °C for 4 h under 5% CO 2 to initiate/enhance the metabolizing of MTT.…”

“…Regarding the results, the honey-based gel used in the present study, exhibited the lowest IC 50 value, determined using an ABTS assay, compared with both the 21 different Greek honey types and Manuka ( 66 ). Bazaid et al investigated the scavenging activity of Manuka honey using ABTS RSC assay among other assays ( 67 ). Concerning the results of the present study, the honey-based gel exhibited a lower IC 50 value (0.88 mg/ml) than the assessed Manuka honey (4.49 mg/ml) ( 67 ).…”

“…Consuming nuts on a regular basis has been linked to a lower risk of both fatal and non-fatal myocardial infarction. According to epidemiological studies, compared to people who never consumed nuts, those who consumed nuts five or more times per week had a 50% lower risk of coronary heart disease [ 105 , 106 ]. Green walnut hull extract suppressed protein secretion and thrombin-induced platelet aggregation by 50% in an in vitro investigation, with no deleterious effects on platelets at a dosage of 50 mg/mL.…”
