Antioxidant capacity of calendula officinalis flowers extract and prevention of radiation induced oropharyngeal mucositis in patients with head and neck cancers: a randomized controlled clinical study

Abstract: This study was designed to determine the effect of Calendula officinalis flowers extract mouthwash as oral gel on radiation-induced oropharyngeal mucositis (OM) in patients with head-and-neck cancer. Forty patients with neck and head cancers under radiotherapy or concurrent chemoradiotherapy protocols were randomly assigned to receive either 2% calendula extract mouthwash or placebo (20 patients in each group). Patients were treated with telecobalt radiotherapy at conventional fractionation (200 cGy/fraction, … Show more

“…6 Several reports experimentally confirm the pharmacological activities of this plant and also of its isolated compounds, including anti-inflammatory, anti-edematous, anti-HIV, 10 antibacterial and antifungal 3 activities, and wound healing by in vivo assays 7,8 and clinical trials in patients with head-and-neck cancer. 9 Other reported activities include immuno-stimulating and immunomodulatory, 11 spasmolytic, spasmogenic and gastroprotective, 12,13 insecticidal, 14 heart rate decrease, 15 cardioprotective, 16 geno-toxic and antigenotoxic dose-dependent, 17 antioxidant 4,[18][19][20] and antitumoral effects. 7,21,22 Mentha cervina L. (Lamiaceae) also known as Hart's pennyroyal, is an aromatic herb, found mainly in Eurasia and Africa.…”

“…[40,41] Klinik öncesi bir araştırmada ratlara uygulanan kalendula of cinalis ekstresinin 5-FU ilişkili oral mukozit iyileşmesini hızlandırdığı rapor edilmiş, [39] klinik bir araştırmada ise tedavinin ilk gününden itibaren tedavi sonlanana kadar jel formundaki %2'lik kalendula of cinalis ekstresi (5mililitre) ile günde üç kez yapılan gargaranın radyoterapi ilişkili oral mukozit şiddetini azalttığı belirtilmiştir. [16] Kalandula of cinalisin antioksidan özelliği göz önünde bulundurulduğunda, serbest oksijen radikallerini azaltarak oral mukozitin başlangıç fazını önlediği ya da geciktirdiği düşünülebilir. [39] Araştırma sonuçları, kalendula of cinalisin mukozit yönetiminde yarar sağladığına ilişkin sonuçlar içerse de, araştırma sayısının sınırlı olması ve uluslararası klinik uygulama rehberlerinde yer almaması, bitkinin klinik kullanımı ile ilgili kanıtların yetersiz olduğunu göstermektedir.…”
