This study investigates in vitro targets related to diabetes in 30 herbal extracts from Peru, for the first time, using α-glucosidase, aldose reductase (AR) inhibitory assays and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) scavenging assays. Among the 30 herbal extracts, Hypericum laricifolium Juss. (HL) was the herb which showed more than 50% inhibition in all assays, presenting 97.2 ± 2.0%, 56.9 ± 5.6%, 81.9 ± 2.5%, and 58.8 ± 4.6% inhibition for the α-glucosidase, AR, DPPH, and ABTS assays, respectively. Finally, six bioactive compounds, namely, protocatechuic acid, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, kaempferol 3-O-glucuronide, quercetin, and kaempferol were identified in HL by offline high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Quercetin exhibited the strongest inhibition in all enzyme assays and the strongest antioxidant activity. The results suggest that HL shows great potential for the complementary treatment of diabetes and its complications.

“…The obtained data clearly shows that the ABTS method recorded the highest antioxidant activity (94.8%), at the extract concentration of 100 µg/ml, which exceeds that of the standard BHT (84.6%), ascorbic acid (87%) and petroleum ether extract at the same concentration (22.84%). The dose response curves of promising sample (Crude methanolic extract) was analysed, suggesting that there is a positive correlation between the concentration of the sample (5-50 μg/ml) and the antioxidant activity against DPPH radical (12-70%) (El-Moein et al 2012) [32] . Introduction:In recent years, many infectious diseases are emerging as a pandemic. COVID-19 is one of the major challenges for mankind at present. The third wave of SARS-CoV-2 outbreak has already started hitting the world and new variants has also started spreading. At present, patients with severe COVID-19 are treated with antiviral drugs for controlling viral infection and supportive treatment with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial drugs to control hyper inflammatory response and secondary infection respectively. Antioxidant drugs are also gaining importance in COVID-19 patient's supportive care. Many herbal preparations are known and have been proven for their health benefits such as immune-modulatory, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and Antioxidant roles. Methods: Four herbal plants of household use were selected for the study namely garlic, cloves, cinnamon and eucalypts. Research data was collected for all the plants for their immune-modulatory, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and Antioxidant roles and presented comprehensively in the preparation of this manuscript. Results: Essential oils and extracts of medicinal plants such as garlic, cloves, cinnamon and eucalypts have all those characteristics required to prevent as well as control infection and supportive care which is important in the fight against COVID-19. Discussion: There is relevance in the treatment strategy for COVID-19 and medicinal properties of plant extracts which make these medicinal plants as a potential alternative to pharmacological agents for immunity boost up, treatment and management of viral pandemics including COVID-19 outbreak.

Backgroundand study aim: Toxoplasma gondii is a globally distributed parasite that causes oxidative stress as a part of the mechanism of neuropathology. The currently available treatments for toxoplasmosis are of limited efficacy because of its distinct pathophysiology. This study aimed to assess the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of Lepidium sativum seed extract, olive leaves extract, resveratrol, and Eucalyptus either as a monotherapy or in combination with pyrimethamine-sulfadiazine in experimental toxoplasmosis by histopathological and immunohistochemical studies.Patients and Methods: One-hundredseventy-six Swiss albino mice were divided into eleven experimental groups (16 mice each) as follows Group (1) Control non-infected, Group (2) Control infected, Group (3) infected and treated with pyrimethamine-sulfadiazine, Group (4) infected and treated with RSV, Group (5) infected and treated with Eucalyptus, Group (6) infected and treated with Lepidium sativum, Group(7) infected and treated with olives leaves extract, Group (8) infected and treated with pyrimethamine-sulfadiazine and RSV, Group(9) infected and treated with pyrimethamine-sulfadiazine and Eucalyptus, Group (10) infected and treated with pyrimethamine-sulfadiazine and Lepidium sativum, Group (11) infected and treated with pyrimethaminesulfadiazine and olives leave extract.Results: Histopathological examination of liver and brain tissues displayed marked improvement in all treated groups with a significant effect on the expression of iNOS and NSE, mainly in olives leaves extract treated groups. Conclusion:Olive leaf extract, Lepidium sativum seed extract, resveratrol, and Eucalyptus can be promising efficient natural alternatives that can ameliorate the histopathological changes and oxidative stress triggered by the parasite during Toxoplasma gondii infection.
