Antioxidant Potential of Curcumin—A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials

Abstract: Background: Antioxidant potential is defined as the ability to neutralize oxygen free radicals that are generated in excess due to environmental influences. The body’s defense mechanisms often require support in preventing the effects of oxidative stress. The literature data suggest that curcumin has antioxidant activity that can significantly reduce oxidative stress levels. The aim was to assess the impact of curcumin on oxidative stress markers. Methods: PubMed and Embase were searched from database inceptio… Show more

“…Curcumin is well documented due to potent pharmacological activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-mutagenic anti-angiogenic, and antidiabetic [59,60]. Additionally, curcumin is useful to treat irritable bowel syndrome due to its ability to modulate the gut microbiota [61]. Hydroxytyrosol (compound 69) was observed in negative mode at m/z 153.0553, which was further identified through MS 2 [63].…”

“…Aside bioavailability, the varied duration of these studies can account for the distinct findings between the two trials. Nevertheless, a recent meta-analysis further confirmed the prooxidant and anti-peroxidative effect of curcumin across four randomized clinical trials (67).…”

“…This has led to numerous preclinical and clinical trials to show its efficacy. Indeed, curcumin supplementation in humans has been shown to have significant antioxidant capacity and a tendency to decrease malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations [40].…”
