Antioxidant properties of natural compounds used in popular medicine for gastric ulcers

Abstract: There is evidence concerning the participation of reactive oxygen species in the etiology and physiopathology of human diseases, such as neurodegenerative disorders, inflammation, viral infections, autoimmune pathologies, and digestive system disorders such as gastrointestinal inflammation and gastric ulcer. The role of these reactive oxygen species in several diseases and the potential antioxidant protective effect of natural compounds on affected tissues are topics of high current interest. To consider a nat… Show more

“…Because of the side effects from the use of synthetic compounds (Yildirim et al, 2001), the search for natural substances that can be used as antioxidants in the food, cosmetic and health industries has been intensified (Repetto and Llesuy, 2002). In plants, these compounds are mainly represented by polyphenols, such as flavonoids, and carotenoids (Lizcano et al, 2010).…”

“…Kvietys et al (1990) observed the involvement of neutrophils on the inflammatory process induced by ethanol, that attack the gastric mucosa and this releases inflammatory mediators that are responsible by recruitment of neutrophils. The oxidative stress is also involved on the pathogenesis caused by ethanol, hence the generation of free radicals causes cell and tissue damages, resulting on the gastric lesions (Repetto & Llesuy, 2002).…”
