Antioxidant Properties Schiff Base and Iron(II) Complex: Synthesis and Characterization

Abstract

The synthesis and characterization of L (Schiff base ligand) and its Fe(II) metal complexes were reported. Structure of the synthesized Fe(II) complex were determined on the basis of microanalysis, infrared, ultraviolet-visible spectra, thermal analysis and mass spectra as well as molar conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The elemental analysis of the metal complex was in good agreement with the calculated values. The complex was found to have a 1:1 metal-ligand stoichiometric ratio for Fe(II) complex. The experimental results show that the examined Fe(II) complex contain hydrated water molecules and coordinated water molecules. The results suggest that Schiff base behave as monobasic tridentate ONO ligand and coordinate to Fe(II) in octahedral geometry according to the general formula [LFeCl(H2O)2]3H2O. The conductivity value between 17.00 Ω -1 mol -1 cm -2 in DMF suggest the presence of non-electrolyte species. Furthermore, antioxidant activities of the synthesized complex was examined used by the DPPH and ABTS assays and exhibited that the prepared complexes have a good antioxidant activity. The results showed that Fe(II) complex had better antioxidant ability than the ligand. The results showed that the free radical scavenging activity of the Fe complex was higher than ascorbic acid and BHT standard compounds.
