Antioxidant, α-glucosidase inhibitory activity and sub-chronic toxicity of Derris reticulata extract: its antidiabetic potential

Abstract: BackgroundAntidiabetic activity of Derris reticulata extract on alloxan-induced diabetic rats has been reported. The extract was found to lower blood glucose and inhibit intestinal glucose absorption. The aim of this study was to further investigate mechanisms underlying the antihyperglycemic activity of D. reticulata extract in vitro.MethodsThe aqueous extract was obtained from D. reticulata stem. Phytochemical screening, total phenolic, and flavanoid contents were examined. ABTS and DPPH scavenging assays, a… Show more

“…RINm5F cells (2 × 10 5 ) were incubated with CGF extract (Concentration: 0.0625 and 0.50 mg/mL) for 24 h. After the incubation period, the medium was removed. Cells were treated with alloxan at 9 mM (which caused about 50% of cell death) for 1 h 31 . At the end of experiment, cell viability was assessed by MTT assay as previously described 32 …”

“…Accordingly, researchers are looking for new potential antidiabetic agents from natural sources with less adverse effects. 9 Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia, characterized by memory loss and other cognitive disabilities. Down-regulation of acetylcholine is associated with the development of AD.…”

“…It is noted however that the ratios of plasma AST/ALT (>3:1) in both the control and treated rats were higher than the normal value reported in rats (2:1). Previous animal studies in Thailand using Wistar or Sprague Dawley rats (provided by the National Laboratory Animal Center of Thailand: NLACT) also reported the ratios of greater than 3:1 [26, 27]. Histopathological examination did not reveal any abnormality both in the control and treated groups.…”
