Antioxidants effects and resistance against pathogens of Colossoma macropomum (Serassalmidae) fed Mentha piperita essential oil

Abstract: Immunostimulants in farmed fish diets has been considered an effective approach to health management. This study aimed to assess antioxidant effects and resistance against pathogens of Colossoma macropomum (tambaqui) fed essential oil (EO) of M. piperita at 0%, 0.5%, 1.0% and 1.5% kg −1 commercial feed during 30 days. Tambaqui were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila and did not present clinical signs of alterations. Higher hepatic catalase activity was observed in fish fed 1.0% of M. piperita EO, compared wi… Show more

“…Also, Moringa oleifera supplementation has a positive effect on fish growth and natural anti-stress phytotherapy due to its phenolic and flavonoid compounds (Elabd et al, 2019). Besides, the use of Mentha piperata in fish diets has promoted growth performance and immunity (Ribeiro et al, 2018).…”

“…Also, Moringa oleifera supplementation has a positive effect on fish growth and natural anti‐stress phytotherapy due to its phenolic and flavonoid compounds (Elabd et al., 2019). Besides, the use of Mentha piperata in fish diets has promoted growth performance and immunity (Ribeiro et al., 2018). Moreover, Bag et al., 2012 reported the usefulness of the aquatic weed Lemna minor as a fish feed that enhances the growth, growth parameters and fecundity of Oreochrois mossambicus .…”

“…Peppermint plant extracts can be found in various forms, such as powder, aqueous extracts, or essential oil. However, peppermint essential oil (PEO) is a more concentrated extract, consisting of high proportions of menthol (33-54%), menthone (7-18%), and menthol acetate (4-13%) [16][17][18][19]. Therefore, in addition to improving digestion, peppermint exhibits potent antioxidant [16,17], antifungal [7,18,19], and antibacterial [7,[19][20][21] properties, which may contribute to enhancing intestinal health through modulation of microbial activity and reduction in inflammatory processes [22], thus alleviating stress.…”
