Antioxidants extraction from Pinhão ( Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze) coats and application to zein films

Abstract: A B S T R A C TSeeds from Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze are consumed after cooking and their coats discarded. Both coats and the cooking water present phenolic compounds, which may be used to improve mechanical properties and provide antioxidant characteristics to films. The objective of this work was to obtain and pinhão coat extracts and to apply these polyphenolic-rich extracts in zein films. Phenolic compounds composition, extraction yield and antioxidant activity (DPPH, ABTS and FRAP) of the ext… Show more

“…Sant’Anna, Sfoglia, Mercali, Corrêa, & Brandelli (2016) studied the migration of the phenolic compounds from the bark to the pinhão's endosperm after autoclave cooking at 121°C for 15 min, finding that there was no degradation of the compounds with ABTS radical reduction capacity. De Freitas et al (2018) evaluated the antioxidant capacity (DPPH, ABTS, FRAP) of the water used after cooking the pinhão , observing a great migration of antioxidant compounds from the bark to the water. Souza et al (2014), carried out the extraction of TPC from the bracts using distilled water as a solvent under reflux at 100°C for 15 min.…”

“…The extract preparation was carried out as described by De Freitas et al 3 Briefly, Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze seeds were cooked in boiling water (500 g L −1 ) for 2 h. Subsequently, the cooking water was separated from the seeds and lyophilized (Liotop L101, Liobrás, Brazil) to obtain a dry extract.…”

“…Kuntze) seeds, the sole native gymnosperm of the Atlantic forest in Brazil with great economic, cultural and social importance. 2 Water used in the cooking process for consumption is turned into an extract rich in phenolic compounds, such as catechin, 3,4 making this byproduct a promising source of antioxidants to prepare active food packaging materials. De Freitas et al 3 have prepared an active packaging material based on zein added with the cooking water of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.)…”
