Antioxidants: Friend or foe?

Abstract: Reactive oxygen species are the intermediates that are formed during the normal metabolic process which are effectively neutralized by the antioxidant system of the body. Any imbalance in this neutralization process causes oxidative stress which has been implicated as one of the cause in diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, cardiovascular disorders, cancer etc. Research has enabled the use of antioxidants as therapeutic agents in the treatment of various diseases. Literature also puts forth the negative effec… Show more

“…El malondialdehído (MDA) es una molécula tóxica considerada como un biomarcador del estrés oxidativo, es uno de los ejemplos de los productos finales de las reacciones de la peroxidación lipídica (18) . En esta investigación se encontró que los grupos experimentales a los que se les administró extracto hidroalcohólico de C. engleriana, a dosis de 50 y 300 mg/kg, tuvieron porcentajes de inhibición de 22 y 45%, respectivamente.…”

“…The equilibrium between ROS generation and scavenging activity by antioxidants establishes a homeostatic system. The imbalance disrupted by impaired ROS‐scavenging antioxidants causes oxidative stress . Current researches focus on smart drug delivery systems (SDDSs), gene therapies, and anti‐miRNAs and the exploration of ROS‐scavenging agents with definitive functions to attack mitochondrial ROS .…”

“…Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are the intermediates generated during the normal metabolic activity, which are effectively neutralized by the antioxidant system of the human body. Any imbalance in this normal metabolism leads ROS to damage cell membranes, enzymes and DNA, which has been one of the major causes of various diseases including neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, and inflammatory condition [2]. Antioxidants are believed to prevent the damage caused by oxidative stress.…”
