Antioxidative Activities of Aronia melanocarpa Fruit and Leaf Extracts

Abstract: In this study, the antioxidative effects of Aronia melanocarpa fruit and leaf extracts were investigated. The free radical (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, DPPH) scavenging activities (FSC50) of the ethylacetate and aglycone fractions of fruit extracts were 16.29 μg/mL, and 12.29 μg/mL, respectively. The free radical scavenging activity of fruit extract was higher than that of leaf extracts. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activities (OSC50) of the ethylacetate and aglycone fractions of fruit extracts … Show more

“…Aronia ( Aronia melanocarpa) , also known as black chokeberry, is a deciduous plant of the family Rosaceae and has been cultivated around North African and Eastern European regions (Wu, Gu, Prior, & McKay, 2004). Aronia is known to have antioxidant, anti‐diabetic, and antiallergic properties, and the use of aronia in food is being emphasized (Jeong, 2008; Kulling & Rawel, 2008; Lee et al., 2013; Li & Jeong, 2015; Malik et al., 2003; Oszmiański & Wojdylo, 2005). Multiple studies have evaluated the effects of aronia fortification on foods such as pork patties, yokan, yogurt dressing, makgeolli , and muffin (Chung, 2014; Hwang & Lee, 2013; Kim, Joo, & Choi, 2015; Lee et al., 2014; Park, Kwon, & Moon, 2015).…”

“…Aronia's content of anthocyanin is 80 times that of grapes, 23 times that of strawberries, 11 times that of cranberries, 4 times that of blueberries, and 3.6 times that of Asian berries (Kraemer-Schafhalter et al 1998). As a result of comparing the antioxidant effects of Aronia melanocarpa fruit and leaf extracts, it was reported that the fruit extracts have higher antioxidant activity than the leaves, they also have excellent protective effects against cell damage (Lee et al 2013;Shin & Choe 2015).…”

(Lee, 2017;Park et al, 2015) Figure 6).…”
