Reactive oxygen species are the byproducts of metabolic processes in the body, However, excessive amount may cause side effects such as cancer. Therefore, to reduce the production of these species, but their long-term administration at high doses may induce side effects. Hence, natural materials with antioxidant activities are attracting attention. Two of these natural materials are soybean sprouts and Hovenia dulcis Thunb. fruits, but few studies have evaluated the effects of their combination. Thus, we prepared a soybean sprout extract containing 1.5% H. dulcis Thunb. fruit concentrate (BHM) to develop a functional food material derived from natural products and then confirmed its physicochemical properties and physiological activity. Among the organic acids detected in BHM, malic acid exhibited the highest content of 1,451.03 ppm, and the main free sugars were glucose (645.48 ppm) and fructose (738.11 ppm). Taurine was the most abundant free amino acid at a concentration of 11.95 ppm, followed by those of arginine (10.97 ppm) and glutamic acid (10.16 ppm). Analyses of the mineral components revealed large amounts of Zn and Fe in BHM, and the respective total polyphenol and flavonoid contents in BHM were 957.16 and 601.93 ppm. The DPPH radical and H2O2 scavenging activities and reducing power indicated excellent antioxidant efficacy compared to the positive controls. Furthermore, blood alcohol and acetaldehyde concentrations were measured to confirm the hangover-relieving effects of BHM, with both significantly decreased (p<0.05). BHM displays potential for development as a functional food, and the results of this study may be used as basic data in further research.

Syneilesis palmata Maxim., a plant that grows across the Korean Peninsula, has been traditionally used as a wild, edible green and as a folk remedy. This study analyzed the antioxidant activity and alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity of S. palmata seeds, which had not been previously studied. The extracts were prepared from seeds collected in Bonghwa, Gyeongsangbuk-do in 2018. The total phenolic content was found to be the highest in the MeOH extract at 11.23 mg GAE/g seeds, while the total flavonoid content was the highest in the MeOH extract at 3.69 mg QE/g seeds. The DPPH-radical scavenging activity showed the highest EC 50 in the MeOH extract at 67.0 μg/mL, while the ABTS-radical scavenging activity had the highest EC 50 in the MeOH extract at 24.7 μg/mL. The FRAP value was the highest in the MeOH extract at 1354.5 μM Fe(II)/g extract. The α-glucosidase inhibitory activity showed the highest IC 50 in the MeOH extract at 17.43 μg/ mL. Additionally, individual phenolic compounds were detected in the extract with high α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. Our results thus confirmed that the MeOH extract of S. palmata seeds is rich in phenolic compounds and exhibits antioxidant and αglucosidase inhibitory activities, which together suggest its potential application as an effective functional food and natural medicine.

Antioxidant activities of hot water extract of Syneilesis palmata root and aerial part

This study was performed in order to investigate the antioxidant properties of hot water extract from the root and aerial part of the Syneilesis palmata in respect to its potential use as food, cosmetics material, or medicinal resource. The results showed that the S. palmata root hot water extract (RHW) possessed a higher content of total flavonoid compounds (4.58 mg/g) and total polyphenol compounds (59.11 mg/g). The SOD-like activities of the RHW and APHW were 23.74% and 21.61%, respectively, at a concentration 2,000 ug/mL. In the nitrite scavenging ability of a 2,000 μg/mL concentration, the RHW showed 63.06% (pH 1.2) and 47.16% (pH 3.0). The IC50 values of the nitrite scavenging abilities were 99.93 μg/mL (ascorbic acid), 1,150.85 μg/mL (RHW), and 1,610.25 μg/mL (APHW). The IC50 values of DPPH free radical scavenging abilities were 99.87 μg/mL (RHW) and 118.29 μg/mL (APHW). The inhibition values (IC50) of xanthine oxidase were 139.62 μg/mL (RHW) and 111.11 μg/mL (APHW). In all of the experiments, the S. palmata root hot water extracts have higher activities than the aerial hot water extract, except for the xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity. These results suggest that the S. palmata is a potentially useful antioxidant source for the development of functional nutraceuticals, cosmetics and medicine.
