Antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activities of Polygonum minus: a review of literature

Abstract: Inflammation and oxidative stress are involved in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, hypertension and ischemic heart disease. Natural products play an important role as nutritional supplements with potential health benefits in cardiovascular diseases. Polygonum minus (PM) is an aromatic plant that is widely used as a flavoring agent in cooking and has been recognized as a plant with various medicinal properties including antioxidative and anti-inflammatory actions. Phytoconsti… Show more

“…The administration of myricetin after heart injury rescued pyrimidine biosynthesis in nonmyocyte cells, augmented cardiac repair, and postinfarct heart function [ 20 ]. Since some other flavonoid compounds were also reported to elicit anti-myocardial ischemic effects [ 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 ], some other mechanisms including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities might also be involved with myricetin [ 30 , 31 , 32 ]. Novel flavonoid ENPP1 inhibitors might have similar therapeutic potential to rescue cardiac injury and thus are greatly needed.…”

“…Indirect antioxidant effects are related to stimulating the production or activation of antioxidant enzymes and suppressing pro-oxidant enzymes. Flavonoids have been found to activate intracellular antioxidant signaling pathways to accelerate the production of endogenous antioxidants such as glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT), and inhibition of ROS-generating enzymes such as xanthine oxidase, myeloperoxidase (MDA), and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase [ 128 , 129 ]. Meanwhile, flavonoids could chelate metal ions, thus reducing the formation of free radicals [ 130 , 131 ].…”

“…P. minor has garnered wide attention due to its potential cardiovascular health benefits associated with its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties of P. minor are well investigated in in vitro and in vivo animal studies [ 17 ]. P. minor exhibits its antioxidative effect by directly scavenging superoxide anions [ 18 , 19 , 20 ], inhibiting lipid peroxidation [ 21 , 22 ], and promoting superoxide dismutase activity [ 17 ].…”

In comparison to the extensive literature on P. minor’s antioxidative effect, studies on its anti-inflammatory effect remain scarce.…”
