This narrative review provides an overview of scientific studies on dietary supplements that may affect circulating testosterone (T) levels to explore which substances are scientifically proven to increase T concentration. We also review the scientific literature for their potential mechanisms and laboratory test changes triggered by their use. Based on the analysis of existing data on substances used to increase endogenous T levels, especially double-blind placebo-controlled randomized clinical trials, we selected 2 herbal extracts with the best documented positive effects on T levels, Withania somnifera root and root extracts/leaves and seed extracts of Trigonella foenum-graecum. Although these substances have different postulated mechanisms of action, both significantly increase T levels in men. Withania somnifera may inhibit the effects of cortisol and prolactin on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and directly affect the hypothalamus. Trigonella foenum-graecum seeds contain the active substance diosgenin, which is a precursor for sex hormone synthesis in gonads.

Medicinal herbs have been used since the time of the Vedas. The plants have therapeutic qualities in every part. Secondary metabolites of extensive variety are present in medicinal plants and are utilised in the production of medications as well as in the treatment of many different ailments. Withania somnifera is a medicinal plant, have various properties. 'Ashwagandha' is the popular name of Withania somnifera. It is offered as churna, a finely sieved powder that can be combined with ghee, water or honey. It has memory-enhancing, anti-oxidant, anti-stress, anti-venom, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor effects. It is employed to treat a variety of clinical problems. In addition to being used as a suppressant in HIV/AIDS patients, Withania somnifera is used to treat ulcers, emaciation, colds, coughs, diabetes, conjunctivitis, insomnia, senile dementia, epilepsy, leprosy, Parkinson's disease, nervous disorders, rheumatism, arthritis, intestinal infections, bronchitis and asthma. Background: Lipid peroxidation can be interpreting as an oxidative degeneration of lipids. It happens when a hydroxyl radical removes an electron from polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), which can react with oxygen and other polyunsaturated fatty acids to produceperoxyl radicals and hydroperoxides, thus promulgating the injury. So this repeat cycle of lipid peroxidation process can be responsible of cellular damage. Drug-induced lipid peroxidation is an important phenomenon found to be involved behind it’s certain hazardous side effects due to the generation toxic end products of such peroxidation like malonaldehyde (MA), hydroxynonenal (HNE), etc. Antioxidants play a crucial role in modifying such processes due to their free radical scavenging capability. Objective: Keeping in mind the matter, thisin vitroinvestigation was conducted using cefuroxime, a cephalosporin antibiotic as drug of choice and vitamin C as antioxidant taking liver tissue of goat as lipid source. Methods: The liver homogenate was divided in certain experimental groups that were treated with cefuroxime and ascorbic acid for specific time periods. The level of MA and HNE in the samples was estimated and compared with control. Result: The result showed that Cefuroxime has lipid peroxidation induction capability that was counteracted by ascorbic acid. Conclusion: Thus cefuroxime-induced, peroxidation associated, toxicities may be managed well upon co-administration with the antioxidant vitamin C.
