“…On the other hand, otostegindiol (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg) against Plasmodium berghei exhibited a significant chemosuppression effect (Endale et al, 2013). It should be mentioned that, till date, a number of promising diterpenes and their derivatives have been isolated from natural sources (Pouvelle et al, 1994;Uys et al, 2002;Riel et al, 2002;Kuria et al, 2002;Köhler et al, 2002;Clarkson et al, 2003;Wei et al, 2004;Loyola et al, 2004;Ospina et al, 2005;Kalauni et al, 2006;Ojo-Amaize et al, 2007;Koka et al, 2009;Lane et al, 2009;Wei et al, 2010;Lin et al, 2010;Wangchuk et al, 2010;Stout et al, 2010;Sebisubi et al, 2010;Stout et al, 2011;Cocquyt et al, 2011;Alasbahi and Melzig, 2012;Ebrahimi et al, 2013;Ehrhardt et al, 2013;Walter et al, 2013;Batista et al, 2013;González et al, 2014;Ma et al, 2014;Avilés et al, 2015;Gbedema et al, 2015;Annan et al, 2015;Sadashiva et al, 2015;Namukobe et al, 2015;Ahmad et al, 2016).…”

“…In some studies, diterpenes in nanoformulations (Roy et al, 2010;Mondal et al, 2013) as well as their laboratory derivatives have been reported to exhibit promising anti-NTDs activities (Watson and Preedy, 2010;Mander and Liu, 2010). Additionally, a number of diterpenes have been reported to act against multiple strains responsible for a particular NTD (Sanchez et al, 2006;Dea-Ayuela et al, 2016;Johnson et al, 1993;Riel et al, 2002;Clarkson et al, 2003;Kalauni et al, 2006;Ojo-Amaize et al, 2007;Wangchuk et al, 2010;González et al, 2014;Namukobe et al, 2015;Liu et al, 1997;Prabu et al, 2015;Encarnación-Dimayuga et al, 2006;Rijo et al, 2010;Arai et al, 2014;Xu et al, 2014a;Xu et al, 2014b) and NTDs (Schmidt et al, 2011;Al Musayeib et al, 2014;Ramírez-Macías et al, 2012;Mothana et al, 2014;Falodun et al, 2014;Mizuno et al, 2015;Mongkolvisut and Sutthivaiyakit, 2007;Rangkaew et al, 2009;Ospina and Rodríguez, 2009;Lekphrom et al, 2010;Almutairi et al, 2014).…”

“…Three new and two known diterpenoid alkaloids were discovered from A. orochryseum [31] and one of these alkaloids, atisinium chloride was identified as the drug lead compound against the multi-drug resistant Plasmodium falciparum malaria [32]. Similarly, four known isoquinoline alkaloids with antimalarial activities were isolated from C. calliantha where cheilanthifoline showed best in vitro activities against the P. falciparum chloroquine and antifolate sensitive TM4 strain with IC 50 values of 0.90 μg/mL and multi-drug resistant K1 strain with IC 50 values of 1.22 μg/mL [33].…”

“…Therefore, with the aim of generating good scientific data to assist this cause, we have recently engaged in studies of selected medicinal plants used in BTM. The findings in terms of ethnobotanical identification, phytochemical content and biological activity studies were previously reported (Wangchuk et al, 2007b(Wangchuk et al, , 2010a(Wangchuk et al, , 2010b(Wangchuk et al, , 2011a(Wangchuk et al, , 2011b(Wangchuk et al, , 2012a(Wangchuk et al, , 2012b.These studies required us to first gain an intimate understanding of the BTM, its materia medica, pharmacopoeia, concepts, ethnoquality, medicinal plants and its current practices in Bhutan. Therefore, we studied the BTM methods, traditional literature, current BTM practices, BTM practitioners' views and analyzed them with a modern scientific perspective.…”
