Antiplatelet and antithrombotic effects of cordycepin-enriched WIB-801CE from Cordyceps militaris ex vivo, in vivo, and in vitro

Abstract: BackgroundA species of the fungal genus Cordyceps has been used as a complementary and alternative medicine of traditional Chinese medicine, and its major component cordycepin and cordycepin-enriched WIB-801CE are known to have antiplatelet effects in vitro. However, it is unknown whether they have also endogenous antiplatelet and antithrombotic effects. In this study, to resolve these doubts, we prepared cordycepin-enriched WIB-801CE, an ethanol extract from Cordyceps militaris-hypha, then evaluated its ex vi… Show more

“…Importantly, the amount of codycepin containing WIB‐801CE (69.30 ± 0.20 mg/g, about 6.93%) was reported to be much higher than that of whole fruiting body myelia of C . militaris (about 0.16%; Kwon, Shin, Lim, et al, ). In addition, cordycepin‐enriched WIB‐801C attenuates blood‐spinal cord barrier disruption followed blood cell infiltration by inhibiting metalloprotease‐9 expression and activity, thereby ameliorates apoptotic cell death, and improves functional recovery after spinal cord injury (J. Y. Lee, Choi, Baik, et al, ).…”

“…Cordyceps is relatively safe but may cause allergies, nausea, and stomach aches in some cases. Certain medications, such as antidiabetic, antithrombotic, and anticancer drugs [ 31 , 231 , 232 ], may interact with Cordyceps; hence, it is advised to consult a doctor before consuming them. The most prominent concern is the accumulation of heavy metals, especially arsenic, in naturally growing mushrooms in contaminated soils.…”
