Antiproliferative activities of Artemisia herba-alba ethanolic extract in human colon cancer cell line (HCT116)

Abstract: Artemisia herba-alba (AHE) is a plant commonly used in traditional medicine for the treatment of various ailments. Here, we investigated the antioxidant and antitumor activity of the aqueous and ethanol extracts of AHE in human colon cancer HCT116 cells. The antioxidant activity was measured by DCFH assay, while antitumor effects were assessed by cell viability assays, cell cycle progression by flow cytometry, and DNA fragmentation analysis in addition to investigating the expression of key cell cycle and apop… Show more

“…Notably, the SW403 cell line, which was previously shown to be relatively less aggressive and non-metastatic ( 18 , 19 ), showed the lowest level of PPFIA4 upregulation among all colon cancer cell lines investigated in our study. Consistently, HCT116, which is a well-known aggressive colon cancer cell line ( 20 ), demonstrated the highest PPFIA4 expression. This finding is in agreement to the strong correlation between PPFIA4 level and cancer grade and patient survival ( Figure 1 ), as PPFIA4 might be a valuable indicator of cancer cell aggressiveness.…”

“…While, in another article, A. sieberia unrefined extract exhibited dose dependent antiproliferative activity against several cancer cell lines (human bladder carcinoma RT112, human laryngeal carcinoma and human myelogenous leukaemia K562), with IC 50 = 81.59, 59.05 and 90.96 µg/mL respectively [12]. The ethanol extract of A. sieberia significantly reduced HCT116 viability (IC 50 of 51 mg/mL at 24 h) in a dose dependent manner and induced apoptosis [13].…”

“…Grape seed extract also showed anticancer activity against these cells at concentrations of 25–100 µg/mL [18]. Artemisia herba has also been reported to show antiproliferative activity against the HCT116 cell line at concentrations of 25–200 µg/mL [19]. Additionally, among the members of the Cupressaceae family, ethanol extract of Juniperus phoenicea L. showed antiproliferative activity against HCT116 cells at concentrations of 5–50 µg/mL [20].…”
