Antiproliferative Activity ofT. welwitschiiExtract on Jurkat T CellsIn Vitro

Abstract: Triumfetta welwitschii is a plant used traditionally for the treatment of fever and diarrhoea. Previous work has shown that T. welwitschii has antibacterial activity. The purpose of this study was to investigate T. welwitschii extract for anticancer activity against Jurkat T cells. The Jurkat T cell line is used to study acute T cell leukaemia. An antiproliferation assay, determination of induction of apoptosis, the determination of the effect of the combination of the extract and GSH, and effects of the extra… Show more

“…It has become the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, including in Saudi Arabia (13). Resistances to treatment with anticancer drugs and toxic side effects have resulted in the need for new anticancer treatments with little or no side effects (14). To date there are limited studies on the effects of alkaline water on cancer cells.…”

“…The cells were further dissolved with 100 µl of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and absorbance measured at 562nm on a 96-well microliter plate multiplex reader. The percentage of cell viability was calculated by the formula as described by Moyo and Mukanganyama 16 as below;…”

“…The absorbance values were recorded and the percentage cell viability calculated by the formula as described by Moyo and Mukanganyama. 19 From these results the 50% cytotoxic concentration (CC 50 ) was determined using regression analysis.…”
