Antiproliferative Effect and Mediation of Apoptosis in Human Hepatoma HepG2 Cells Induced by Djulis Husk and Its Bioactive Compounds

Abstract: The antiproliferative effect and mediation of apoptosis in human hepatoma HepG2 cells induced by djulis husk and its bioactive compounds was investigated. The ethanolic extracts of djulis husk (EEDH) at 50, 250, and 500 µg/mL induced remarkable cytotoxicity on HepG2 cells. By flow cytometry analysis, EEDH slowed down the cell cycle at the Sub-G0 phase after 24 h of incubation. Moreover, all EEDH treatment induced an apoptotic response in HepG2 cells. EEDH-induced apoptosis was associated with the attenuation o… Show more

“…CF is considered a high nutritional value food and a source of bioactive compounds to human health [ 18 ]. Besides abundant dietary fiber, starch, grain-limited essential amino acids, and polyphenols [ 19 , 20 ], CF also contains a class of compounds with a long history of medicinal use, called phytoecdysteroids [ 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ]. Previous studies have reported that CF displayed several biological activities, including, anti-obesity [ 21 ], antihypertensive [ 22 ], antihyperglycemic [ 25 , 26 ], hepatoprotective [ 27 , 28 , 29 ], anticarcinogenic [ 23 , 24 , 30 , 31 ] and anti-aging properties [ 19 , 32 ].…”

Nevertheless, neither the detailed skin protective effects of CF extract nor the underlying mechanisms against skin intrinsic and extrinsic aging associated with oxidative and glycation stress have been revealed to date.…”

“…The endogenous pathway surrounding mitochondria is mainly mediated by the proteins of B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) family. Several structural features are altered during apoptosis: membrane blistering, cytoplasmic crumpling, DNA breaks, chromatin condensation, and DNA degradation of chromosomes [ 10 ].…”

“…Both dietary fibre and polyphenols may impact the composition of gut microbiota, but, at the same time, the metabolism of polyphenols and their bioavailability depends on the gut microbiota’s composition [ 18 ]. Previous studies have shown that djulis has antioxidant, liver protective, skin protective, hypolipidaemic, hypoglycaemic, and antitumour activities [ 17 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ]. Djulis hull is considered agricultural waste that is usually removed during food processing.…”
