Antiprotozoal Activity of Extracts of Elaeodendron Trichotomum (Celastraceae)

Abstract: Background: Chagas disease, amebiasis, giardiasis and trichomoniasis represent a serious health problem in Latin America. The drugs employed to treat these illnesses produce important side effects and resistant strains have appeared. The present study was aimed to evaluate the antiprotozoal activity of leaves, stem bark and root bark of Elaeodendron trichotomum, a celastraceus, that is used in Mexico as an anti-infective in febrile-type diseases. Materials and methods: Dichloromethane and methanol extracts of … Show more

“…Moreover, a simple HPLC method was developed for the identification and comparison of quinonemethide triterpenes in wild Hippocratea excelsa and “cancerina”, a method useful for the control of this herb used in Mexican traditional medicine as an alternative cancer treatment [41]. In addition, Roca-Mézquita and co-workers performed quantitative analysis of pristimerin and tingenone in a dichloromethane extract of Elaeodendron trichotomum , revealing that this species contains both celastroloids, although, unexpectedly, pristimerin was present in very low concentration [29].…”

“…Pristimerin has been reported to have promising clinical potential as both a therapeutic and chemopreventive agent for various types of cancer, including breast [18], glioma [19], prostate [20], pancreatic [21], ovarian [22], colon [23], esophageal squamous [24], osteosarcoma [25], and uveal [26] cancer, via a number of mechanisms [27]. Moreover, tingenone displays antinociceptive [28] and antiprotozoal [29] activities. Since there is pharmacological interest in this type of metabolite and their synthesis is not commercially viable, some research groups have investigated in vitro plant systems to increase their production [30].…”

“…In this condition the following species are employed for this purpose: Cheiloclinium cognatum, Tontelea micranta, Couepia bracteosa and Parinari montana. Cheiloclinium cognatum has been shown to have compounds such as tingenone and tingenol with activity against Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, Trichomonas vaginalis and Trypanosoma cruzi (ROCA-MÉZQUITA et al, 2016), which could substantiate the effectiveness of its use in diarrhea, especially those caused by worms. However, on suspicion of worms, the treatment suggested by the indigenous savant in Cacoal community is made with macerated Erythroxylum macrophyllum and Discoplhora Miers.…”

“…Elaeodendron trichotomum (Turcz.) Lundell is a plant found in the south and southeast of Mexico, and Central America, where it grows on sand dunes, mangrove edges, and semi-deciduous medium woodland [26]. The species is a big, branching, small evergreen tree that may grow up to 12 feet tall.…”
