Antiribosomal P Protein Antibodies in Different Populations of Patients With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Abstract: We report a significantly increased prevalence of antiribosomal P protein antibodies in Malaysian Chinese patients (38%) with SLE compared to white Caucasian (13%) and Afro-Caribbean (20%) patients. The increased prevalence was not due to a generalized increase in autoantibody production because anti-dsDNA and anti-SSA antibodies were present in comparable frequencies in the three ethnic groups while anti-Sm and anti-SSB antibodies were rarely found in the Malaysian Chinese patients.

“…These results do not correlate with a previous study which could be due to the different geographical origin of the samples. Indeed, it has been shown that different frequencies in the positivity of RPP aAbs can occur depending on the ethnic group of SLE patients [3,5,23].…”

“…Autoantibodies directed against the ribosomal P proteins (RPP aAb) have been described mostly in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) [1][2][3][4][5], and some associated with neuropsychiatric manifestations [6][7][8][9][10][11]. The ribosomal P constitute proteins a family of highly conserved, acidic phosphoproteins forming the stalk of the 60S ribosomal subunits.…”

“…In addition, results of 2 Japanese studies (4,6) have demonstrated a high prevalence of anti-P (42%) in patients with active SLE by immunoblotting. A high prevalence of anti-P (38%) has also been found among Malaysian Chinese (8). Teh and Isenberg suggested that the disparities in prevalence reported in these studies may derive from ethnic differences among the patients studied, and they raised the possibility that the presence of anti-P may be genetically determined (9).…”

“…To date, the only association of antiribosomal P antibodies and other autoantibodies in patients with pSLE is the demonstration that patients with antiribosomal P antibodies had a higher prevalence of anti-U1 ribonucleoprotein and anti-Sm than antiribosomal P-negative patients with pSLE [40]. This association with anti-Sm antibodies was also demonstrated in one study of adults with SLE [47]. Other clinical features reported to be associated 25 [15] Bader-Meunier [228] *Nationwide survey.…”
