“…The effect of aureomycin on thyroid gland was first reported by Calesnick (1954) who suggested an antithyroid action of the antibiotic. Since then the proposal has encountered pros and cons (Libby and Meites, 1954;Grant, 1954;Telkka and Kuusisto, 1954;Mellen and Waller, 1954;Wu and Ma, 1963;Davis et al, 1966), among which opponents are predominant.…”

“…Natural plant goitrogens, though important in ruminants, are unlikely to be consumed in sufficient quantities by the dog to produce dysfunction. Drugs are the most potentially serious goitrogenic agents in the dog, amongst them phenylbutazone, resorcinol in ointments absorbed through the skin, and possibly certain antibiotics in large doses (Calesnick et al, 1954). The resultant drug goitre is more likely to appear under conditions of iodine-deficiency.…”

“…An analysis of variance of the unadjusted mean thyroid weights ( a need for study of the effects of crystalline antibiotics on thyroid function. It should be noted that Calesnick et al (1954) reported that antibiotics reduced thyroid uptake of radioactive iodine in their rats. In this laboratory, we are planning to study the effects of antibiotics on the serum protein-bound iodine of chickens.…”

“…of feed) depressed thyroid size slightly in^ young chickens. A recent report by Calesnick et al (1954) indicated that antibiotics may exert an antithyroid effect in rats. Their results were interpreted as "suggestive evidence that aureomycin and potassium penicillin G have a goitrogenic action which simulates the thiouracils."…”
