“…Initial criteria for the selection of surveys were the following: 1) sample size >250 individuals (or >500 alleles); 2) AAT phenotype determination performed by means of crossed antigen–antibody electrophoresis (XAA), isoelectric focusing (IEF) in polyacrilamide gels, or polymerase chain reaction (PCR); and 3) PI type characterisation performed without any previous screening procedure. By applying these three main criteria, we have selected 59 out of the initial 85 studies [13–16,18,19,22–24,27–30,32–34,37–39,42,46,48,49,55,58–60,62–64,66,67,70,75–78,85,86,92,95,96]. Later, we have calculated S and Z 95% confidence intervals (CI) of outcomes for each of those 59 selected surveys for p at a significance level of α<0.05, using the 770 and 771 formulas of Documenta Geigy Scientific Tables [98] for a binomial distribution.…”
