Antiviral Activity of Four New Resin Glycosides Calysolins XIV–XVII from Calystegia soldanella against Herpes Simplex Virus

Abstract: Four new resin glycosides, named calysolins XIV (1), XV (2), XVI (3), and XVII (4) were isolated from the leaves, stems, and roots of Calystegia soldanella ROEM. et SCHULT. (Convolvulaceae). Their structures were determined based on spectroscopic and chemical evidence, and consisted of two different types: those (1) with a macrolactone structure and those (2-4) with a non-macrolactone structure. Their sugar moieties were partially acylated by specific organic acids, including tiglic, 2S-methylbutyric, and 2S,3… Show more

“…Seventeen new resin glycosides, named calysolins I–XVII ( 118 – 134 ), were isolated from the crude resin glycoside fraction along with soldanelline B ( 135 ). Their structures were determined on the basis of spectroscopic data and chemical evidence [5356] (Fig. 10).…”

“…Compounds 121 , 124 – 126 , and 128 – 131 were the first examples of hexaglycosides of resin glycosides with a macrolactone structure. Additionally, 118 – 135 showed antiviral activity toward herpes simplex type 1 [5456].

“…A range of natural, and semisynthetic non‐pyrrolic organic compounds exhibit the exceptional 1,6‐glycopyranosyl‐bridged macrocyclic bicyclo‐[ n .3.1]‐structure and are the target of considerable interest from biological and pharmaceutical points of view . Indeed, among such 1,6‐glycopyranose‐bridged organic compounds, also classified as ansaglycosides, figure inhibitors of cell growth, as well as compounds with antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral effects . The exceptional bc PBs in grapevine leaves may be surmised to play crucial (however, still elusive) physiological roles, both in plants and in humans.…”

“…Alkyl p -coumarates of an n -hexane fraction from a C. soldanella extract inhibited PTP1B activity in vitro (37). Resin glycosides from C. soldanella , calysolins V-IX, X-XIII, and XIV-XVII, induced antiviral activity against the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) (3941,4346). An active fraction of Ipomoea carnea subsp.…”
