Antrodia tropica sp. nov. from southern China inferred from morphological characters and molecular data

Abstract: Antrodia tropica sp. nov. is described and illustrated on the basis of collections originating from Hainan, southern tropical China. Both the morphology and phylogenetic analysis of rDNA ITS sequences support this new species. Morphologically, it is characterized by resupinate basidiocarps, an annual growth habit, greyish to pinkish buff pore surface, a dimitic hyphal system with clamped generative hyphae, and cylindrical to subfusiform basidiospores. The hymenophoral trama is dominated by generative hyphae, w… Show more

“…Polypores are an extensively studied group of Basidiomycota (Gilbertson and Ryvarden 1987;Núñez and Ryvarden 2001;Ryvarden and Melo 2014), but the Chinese polypore diversity is still not well known, especially in the subtropics and tropics; many recently described genera of polypores have been from these areas (Cui 2013;Li et al , 2014Chen et al 2014Chen et al , 2016Zhao et al 2015). The new genus in the present study, Leifiporia, is also from the subtropics.…”

“…8S,nrLSU,nrSSU,rpb1,rpb2,tef1) datasets have helped to investigate the phylogenetic overview of the Polyporales, in which 35 families were recognized in Polyporales, and the Polyporaceae species were mainly nested in the core polyporoid clade (Binder et al 2013;Zhao et al 2015). Overviews of studies on fungal diversity worldwide have been carried out based on increasing specialized knowledge and new techniques (Hawksworth 2012;Dai et al 2015), Section Editor: Franz Oberwinkler and new genera of polypores have recently been found (Miettinen and Larsson 2011;Cui 2013;Li et al , 2014Sotome et al 2013;Spirin et al 2013;Chen et al 2014Chen et al , 2016Ariyawansa et al 2015;Ghobad-Nejhad 2015;Westphalen et al 2015;Zhou et al 2016).…”

“…Recently, based mainly on Chinese specimens and strains and on type and authentic specimens outside China, the phylogenies of genera belonging to four orders (Hymenochaetales, Polyporales, Russulales and Thelephorales) of Agaricomycetes were resolved or preliminarily characterized, such as Antrodia P. Karst. [62], Bondarzewia Singer [63], Daedalea Pers. [64], Fomitiporia Murrill [65], Fomitopsis P. Karst.…”

“…Recently, molecular data along with morphology were used to certify the taxonomy and phylogeny of wood-inhabiting fungi in China (Cui et al 2008, 2011b, Cui 2013, Cui & Decock 2013, Li & Cui 2013, Tian et al 2013, Yuan 2013, Zhao & Cui 2013, Zhao et al 2013). During investigations of wood-inhabiting fungi in China, nearly 200 specimens were preliminarily identified as Datronia spp., but their taxonomic affinities and phylogenetic relationships remain uncertain.…”
