Anxiety and depression in transgender individuals: The roles of transition status, loss, social support, and coping.

Abstract: Results suggest the need for practitioners to focus on interventions that reduce avoidant coping strategies, while simultaneously increasing social support, in order to improve mental health for transgender individuals. Individuals who are in the beginning stages of their transition will use different coping strategies than those who are in later stages; interventions should be adjusted on the basis of the transition status of transgender clients.

“…21 Further, quantitative data show that the use of avoidant coping strategies during transitioning, to manage gender-related stress, is associated with depression and anxiety, and the experience of loss (e.g., of employment) during the transition is further associated with psychological distress, especially for trans men (female-to-male). 8 Based on the theoretical association between stressful experiences and psychological distress in trans individuals, the current study aimed to investigate (1) whether a history of both physical and sexual violence, and discrimination based on gender identity, increased the odds of trans individuals reporting a lifetime history of SI, and (2) whether there were differences in lifetime SI based on the status of gender transition.…”

“…This cycle contributes to increased workplace exclusion for trans individuals, and tacitly condones the continuation of discrimination towards and abuse of trans members of staff. This is disadvantageous from a health and safety perspective, as trans individuals experience higher levels of depression and anxiety than the general population, in part due to experiencing harassment, bullying, and other forms of mistreatment at work (Bockting, Miner, Swinburne Romine, Hamilton, & Coleman, 2013;Budge, Adelson, & Howard, 2013).…”

“…By preventing organizational leaders from having the information necessary to make effective decisions or to correct problems regarding the treatment of trans employees, unheard voices contribute to the intensification of those problems (Morrison & Rothman, 2009). Given the high rates of discrimination and abuse perpetrated against transgender individuals, as reviewed earlier in this paper, and the high incidence of depression and attempted suicide among members of the trans community (Budge et al, 2013;Clements-Nolle, Marx, & Katz, 2006), any increase in voice that may increase awareness and acceptance of transgender issues has the potential to make a considerable impact on the lives of trans employees.…”
