Background Older adults’ psychological health is a public health issue that cannot be ignored, especially when these psychological health problems and related factors change across different social backgrounds because of rapid changes in traditions and family structures and the epidemic responses after the outbreak of COVID-19 in China. The aim of our study is to determine the prevalence of anxiety and depression and their associated factors among community-dwelling older adults in China. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted from March to May 2021 with 1173 participants aged 65 years or above from three communities in Hunan Province, China who were selected using convenience sampling. A structured questionnaire including sociodemographic characteristics, clinical characteristics, the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), the 7-Item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-7), and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 Item (PHQ-9) was used to collect relevant demographic and clinical data and to measure social support status, anxiety symptoms, and depressive symptoms, respectively. Bivariate analyses were conducted to explore the difference in anxiety and depression based on samples’ different characteristics. The multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to test for significant predictors of anxiety and depression. Results The prevalence of anxiety and depression were 32.74% and 37.34%, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that being female, being unemployed before retirement age, lacking physical activity, having physical pain, and having three or more comorbidities were significant predictors for anxiety. Subjective social support and support utilization were significant protective factors. Regarding depression, religion, lacking physical activity, having physical pain, having three or more comorbidities were found to be significant predictors. Support utilization was a significant protective factor. Conclusions The study group showed a high prevalence of anxiety and depression. Gender, employment status, physical activity, physical pain, comorbidities, and social support were associated with psychological health problems of older adults. These findings suggest that governments should focus on the psychological health problems of older adults by raising community awareness of issues related to older adults’ psychological health. They should also screen for anxiety and depression among high-risk groups and encourage individuals to seek supportive counseling.

Background India is passing through a phase of demographic and epidemiological transition where ageing and chronic morbidities are being more common. Though studies have examined the prevalence and risk factors of pain and other chronic morbidities, nationally representative research examining the association of pain and quality of life (QoL) is limited in India. This study examines the association between pain and QoL among middle-aged and older adults in India. Methods This study uses the data from wave 1 of the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) conducted in 2017-18. This study is restricted to 58,328 individuals from all states (except Sikkim), aged 45 years and above. The quality of life is measured in 6 domains (physical, psychological, social, environment, general health and life satisfaction) with 21 variables that range from 0 to 100. The principal component analysis was used to generate a composite score of QoL and the multiple linear regression was used to show the association between pain and quality of life. Results It is estimated that approximately 37% of Indian middle-aged and older populations were often troubled with pain. Pain prevalence increase with age and is more common among older adults aged 75 + years (43.37%; 95% CI, 40.95–45.80), and female (41.38%; 95% CI, 39.36–43.39). The average QoL score among those with pain was 81.6 compared to 85.2 among those without pain. QoL was lower among elderly age 75 and above, females, rural residents and illiterates. Controlling for socio-demographic factors, pain reduces the QoL by 2.57 points (β= −2.57; 95% CI, −3.02 - −2.11). Conclusion Pain reduces the quality of life among middle-aged adults and older adults in India. This evidence could potentially help the policymakers to consider pain as a significant determinant of quality of life in India.

Though studies examined the prevalence, variation and risk factors of many chronic morbidities, we didn’t find any research examining the effect of pain on QOL of older adults in India. This study examines the effect of pain on quality of life (QOL) among middle-aged and elderly in India. Methods: This study uses the data from wave 1 of the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) conducted in 2017-18. This study is restricted to 58,328 individuals from all states (except Sikkim), who have aged above 45 years. A multivariate model has been used to show the association between pain and quality of life. Results: It is estimated that approximately 37% of Indian middle-aged and older populations are often troubled with pain. Pain prevalence increase with age and is more common among elderly aged 75 + years (40.48%; 95% CI, 38.02–42.94), women (43.32%; 95% CI, 41.51–45.12). The overall QOL score was found to be 87 on a scale of 0-100 and it varies by different socio-demographic factors. Results from the multivariate analysis suggest that the occurrence of pain reduces the QOL by 4.58 units (β= -3.58; 95% CI, -4.00 - -3.17). Conclusion: This article shows the association between pain and quality of life among middle-aged adults and the elderly in India. This evidence could potentially help the policymakers to consider pain as a significant determinant of quality of life as the presence of pain significantly reduces the QOL among the middle-aged and elderly in India
