Anxiety in patients undergoing fast-track knee arthroplasty in the light of recent literature.

Prowadzi do zaburzeń procesów fizjologi… Show more

“…However, it has been proved that excessive anxiety negatively affects patients' outcomes, as demonstrated among patients in a variety of medical settings [9,64,65,[95][96][97]. Excessive degrees of preoperative anxiety induced by real or even implied threats can activate the stress axis, namely, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) system, which in turn induces multisystem physiological responses, primarily in the cardiovascular system [98,99]. These responses include tachycardia, hypertension, arrhythmias, and higher levels of pain, which may persist in the postoperative period [100].…”

“…[ 8 ] Anxiety disorders are considered common mental illnesses, with high worldwide prevalence. [ 9 ] It has been reported that the patients who are considered anxious have worse outcome score than the patients with higher scores of psychosocial component. Even if we consider their importance, only a few researches have tried to determine the existence of psychological disorders such as anxiety.…”

“…Patients undergoing a hip or knee operation have a high prevalence of adverse effects from surgery, such as anxiety and pain (Kehlet, Jensen, & Woolf, ; Wilson et al., ; Zietek, Zietek, & Szczypior, ). Older patients report additional age‐related complications, such as postoperative delirium (Ilango, Pulle, Bell, & Kuys, ; Oh et al., ).…”

“…Hospital stays have reduced for hip and knee surgeries in the past decade, due to the implementation of evidence-based clinical practices and the use of advanced technologies during surgery (Ashman et al, 2016). Nonetheless, research has shown that patients continue to experience anxiety, pain and postoperative delirium, suggesting that standard treatment alone is inadequate in managing these outcomes (Bonnin, Basiglini, & Archbold, 2011;Ilango et al, 2016;Zietek et al, 2014).…”
