Anxiolytic Effects of the Methanolic Extract of Bacopa monniera in Mice

Abstract: Bacopa monniera Linn. or Brahmi, a plant in the family Scrophulariaceae, is used as a traditional medicine for memory improvement, dementia like anxiety, depression, epilepsy etc. for a long time in Bangladesh. This study evaluated the anxiolytic effects of the methanolic extract of B. monniera (MEBM) in animal models of anxiety. For the further tests and phytochemical screening, the whole plant of B. monniera extracted following maceration method. The extract was evaluated for anxiolytic activity using light/… Show more

“…Brahmi extracts with bacosides has been reported to show anxiolytic activity in animals 12 . Brahmi has been shown to have GABAergic activity and also modulates the activities of Hsp70, P450 and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the brain and thereby protecting the brain from the deleterious effect of stress [13][14][15] . Brahmi extract effectively normalizes stress-induced plasma corticosterone levels, and monoamines such as 5HT, Norepinephrine, and dopamine in the rat brain 16 .…”

“…[205] Similarly, using light/ dark box, elevated plus maze, marble burial and rota rod trials in mice at doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg, p.o., the methanolic extract of the arial parts also has anxiolytic effects. [206] Himalaya Herbals Brahmi tablets demonstrated an anxiolytic effect in general as well as in ethanol withdrawal triggered by anxiety in rats. [207]…”

“…The success so far in the use of phytomedicinal products like Metformin in Diabetes II treatment justified the continued search for phytochemicals with more effective and safer antidiabetic actions [8,9]. However, it is often common to observe that researchers on phytomedicines use different solvents in the extraction of the phytochemicals [10,11,12,13,14]. It is therefore pertinent to assess and compare the extractive yields of the commonly used solvents and their antidiabetic phytochemicals.…”
