Anxiolytic-like effect of hydroalcoholic extract of ripe pistachio hulls in adult female Wistar rats and its possible mechanisms

Abstract: The present study was designed to study the preventive effect of hydroalcoholic extract of ripe pistachio hulls (RPH) in the elevated plus maze model of anxiety. One hundred twenty female wistar rats in their estrous cycle were divided into 15 groups of 8 each and received various concentrations of hydroalcoholic extract of RPH except the control groups. Elevated plus maze was used to measure the level of anxiety. Percentage of time spent in the open arms (%OAT), percentage of the number of entries into the op… Show more

“…Moreover, the AChE inhibitory activity of its fruit hull methanol extract was proven in another study by a percentage of 5.5 % in enzyme inhibition [35]. The anxiolytic effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of its hull (10 mg/kg) has been shown in female rats, which might be concluded due to the role of GABA and estrogen receptors in its antianxiety effect [36].…”

“…Pistachios and pistachio extracts appear to play further roles in cognitive function, inducing neurobehavioral and neurochemical modifications [117,118] and exerting anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects [119,120]. Pistachio consumption also been linked to restoration of gut microbiota composition, with improved Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, Turicibacter and Romboutsia (beneficial bacteria) profiles [121,122].…”
