Abstract: The findings imply that increased apathy mediates the relationship between cognition and depression. The identification of mediating effects may inform future treatment strategies and preventive interventions that can focus on decreasing apathy to improve cognition in late-life depression.

“…Apathy may be more likely to occur in those with frontal lobe deficits (Brodaty et al, 2005). Increased apathy is found to mediate the relationship between cognition and depression (Funes et al, 2018). Apathy is the most common and persistent neuropsychiatric symptom in AD patients, occurring in 55% of dementia patients (Aalten et al, 2007), which is a prevalent neuropsychiatric manifestation in individuals with AD.…”

“…19 In the elderly, depressive disorders have also been associated with cognitive deficits after mood symptom remission. 20,21 Interestingly, cognitive impairment seems to be mediated by apathy in elderly subjects with MDD as in neurodegenerative diseases like AD and Parkinson's disease. 21 There is considerable overlap in clinical presentation, neuropsychological performance and even neuroimaging findings between elderly patients with depressive disorders and patients with dementia.…”

“…Moreover, it should be noted that perception of self‐efficacy and the concept of cognitive reserve may act as protective factors against cognitive decline and as mediators of depressive symptoms . Likewise, apathy can have a negative impact on the relationship between cognition and depression …”

“…20,21 Likewise, apathy can have a negative impact on the relationship between cognition and depression. 22 With respect to sociodemographic variables, older age, 1,23 female gender, 1,24 and not being married [25][26][27] are related to lower cognitive status. In addition, loneliness is associated with increased depressive symptoms and lower cognitive performance.…”
