Aphidicidal activity of some indigenous plant extracts against bean aphid Aphis craccivora Koch (Homoptera: Aphididae)

Abstract: Aphidicidal activity of hot and cold water extracts of some indigenous plants, Azadirachta indica A. Juss (neem), Calotropis procera (Aiton) W.T. Aiton (akanda), Polygonum hydropiper L. (biskatali) and Ipomoea sepiaria J. Koenig ex Roxb.(bankalmi), were tested against the bean aphid, Aphis craccivora Koch. Hot water extract of P. hydropiper and A. indica was found to be the most eVective (87.6-94.5 and 80.47-89.6% mortality respectively, P < 0.01) among all the extracts. Other hot and cold water extracts also … Show more

“…Botanical insecticides have been suggested to be potent both in rich countries, more conscious about human health, as well as in developing countries being a cheaper source to control insects (Isman 2008). They can act as attractive, repulsive, antifeedant, toxic as well as growth regulator aVecting several physiological processes of insects (Rai and Carpinella 2006;Cox 2004;Ulrichs et al 2008;Das et al 2008;Colom et al 2008). The studies on the sublethal eVects, including enzymes activities, behavior, and neurophysiology can be handy to understand the pesticides role in insects (Li et al 2007).…”

“…Ipomoea sepiaria (I. sepiaria), an important ethanomedicinal plant [7], onsidered as a source plant in classical Ayurvedic drug Lakshmana known for the treatment of leucorrhoea and infertility [8]. Aqueous hot water extract of Bankalmi (Ipomoea sepiaria) is also efficiently used in the control of hispa beetle [9], bean aphid Aphis craccivora Koch [10] , pulse beetle -Callosobruchus maculates [11]. “…Entre as formas de controle de A. craccivora, destacam-se os controles químico (Das et al, 2008), cultural e biológico (Omkar et al, 2005;Rakhshani et al, 2005), além do uso de plantas resistentes (Hall et al, 2003). Essa última alternativa é considerada de maior importância, pois diminui o uso de defensivos agrícolas e evita o surgimento de resistência do inseto a esses produtos.…”
