Aphrodisiac Studies ofTricholepis glaberrima. with Supportive Action from Antioxidant Enzymes

Abstract: Tricholepis glaberrima DC (Compositae) is popularly known as 'brahmadandi' in Ayurveda, the Indian system of medicine. Aerial parts of this plant are used as a nervine tonic, and its infusion was prescribed in seminal debility and impotence. In the current study, we have investigated the effect of methanol extract of the aerial parts in sexually active male rats. In addition, the effect of the extract on the testicular histology and on the activity of two antioxidant enzymes, viz. superoxide dismutase and cata… Show more

“…, 2008). Similarly, flavonoids alter androgen levels which play an important role in sexual stimulation, and also increase superoxide dismutase and catalase activities, thereby imparting an indirect potentiating effect on the sexual behaviour parameters (Padashetty & Mishra, 2007). In addition, terpenes as intracavernosal vasoactive agents are used in the management of vasculogenic impotence (Drewes et al.…”

“…Enhanced dopamine efflux causes facilitation of sexual behavior and has effects on sexual motivation, copulatory proficiency and genital reflexes. Dopamine influences motor activity in mesolimbic tract and activates numerous behavior and genital reflexes [18,32]. Also, dopamine increases IF and reduces IL and ML [6,33].…”

“…Treatments that alter the concentration of circulating sex hormones may also modify sexual behaviour [18]. Administration of the Aqueous extract at all dose levels modified rat copulatory behavior as well as orientation activities, the main determinant for measuring male sexual behavior [19].…”

“…The plant is rich in many pharmaceutical active ingredients like flavonoids, triterpenoids, saponin glycosides, sterols (Chawla et al, 1976;Manerikar and Kulkarni., 1978) Cynaropicrin and 11,13-dihydrodesacylcynaropicrin (Singhal et al, 1982). Tricholepis glaberrima exhibited aphrodisiac (Padashetty and Mishra., 2007), nootropic and antioxidant (Naphade et al, 2009) activities in experimental animals. The present study was to investigate the possible role of Tricholepis glaberrima in rifampicin and Bacillus Calmette-Guerin/lipopolysaccharides (BCG/LPS) induced hepatotoxicity in rats and its mode of hepatoprotective activity.…”
