In many areas of the world, archaeological research relies on workers without formal training in archaeology or apparent direct input into archaeological knowledge production. While these workers may appear to have little agency within the excavation process, and no direct participation in research outcomes, their role is more complex. Examples of local and international archaeological teams working in Türkiye in the mid-twentieth century and today are used here to explore the articulation of worker roles in field archaeology, as portrayed in field reports. The author assesses the language associated with team members in acknowledgements of their presence and status and examines how relationships are developed and maintained. Awareness of knowledge accumulation among local archaeological workers was articulated in the 1960s and proved advantageous to both workers and directors. Recent reports show little acknowledgement of worker presence, showing that multivocality has had no significant impact in this area of archaeological knowledge production.

ANADOLU'DA ROMA İMPARATORLUK DÖNEMİ MİMARİ BLOKLARINDA MEDUSA BEZEMESİ Bilge YILMAZ KOLANCI Özet Medusa, Grek sanatında Arkaik Dönem'den itibaren karşımıza çıkan ve popülerliğini yüzyıllar boyunca koruyan mitolojik bir kadın figürüdür. Tanrıça Athena'nın düşmanlığını kazanan ve ölümlü olduğu için kahraman Perseus tarafından başı kesilerek cezalandırılan Medusa, onunla göz göze gelen kişileri taşa çevirme gücüne sahiptir. Bu inancın yansıması olarak antik döneme ait çeşitli sanat eserleri üzerinde sevilerek betimlenen Medusa, Roma İmparatorluk Dönemi'yle birlikte Anadolu'da inşa edilen dini ve kamusal işleve sahip yapıların dekorasyonunda kullanılan popüler bir bezeme öğesi haline gelmiştir. Farklı yayın çalışmalarındaki örneklerin bir araya getirilmesiyle oluşturulan bu çalışma, Medusa bezemesinin kaide, başlık, arşitrav-friz, tavan-kemer kaseti, konsol, konsollu geison-sima, kemer ve alınlık bloklarının dekorasyonunda kullanıldığını göstermiştir. Bezemenin tespit edildiği yapılar ise başta tapınak olmak üzere nymphaeum ve tiyatrolardır. Ancak propylon, agora, gymnasium, kütüphane, hamam, bazilika ve stadyum gibi kamusal nitelik taşıyan yapıların bezeme programına da alındığı görülmektedir. Julius Cladiuslar Dönemi'nden itibaren mimari bloklar üzerinde yerini alan bezemenin, özellikle MS 2. yüzyıldan MS 3. yüzyılın başına kadar Anadolu'daki birçok bölgede inşa edilen yapıların dekorasyonunda yoğun bir şekilde kullanıldığı tespit edilmiştir. Medusa bezemesinin mimari yapılarda yalnızca doldurma motifi olarak kullanılmadığı, ölümsüzlüğü ifade eden kutsal bir figür olduğu, aynı zamanda betimlendiği yapıyı kötü gözlere/olumsuzluklara karşı koruyan, zaferi ve başarıyı temsil eden sembolik bir ifadesinin olduğu düşünülmektedir.

Based on the archaeological data, the literary evidence, and the epigraphic sources, the article offers an overview of the strong interrelation between the dynamic changes in rituals and the subsequent architectural and structural adjustments of their space of performance. Violent interaction, social transformation, peaceful cross-cultural communication, the migration of new populations, the introduction of new cults, the mobility of ethnic and religious groups, ideological and political factors, and rivalry between cult places are some of the parameters that need to be taken into account, when studying the interdependence between ritual and space. Chronologically, the focus lies mainly on the Hellenistic and Roman Imperial periods, but a few selected examples from the preceding periods shall complete the picture of this complex phenomenon.Résumé : Cet article, fondé sur les données archéologiques, les témoignages littéraires et les sources épigraphiques, propose un panorama des relations étroites qui se nouent entre la dynamique des changements dans les rituels et les ajustements architecturaux et structurels qui en résultent dans l'espace de leur accomplissement. Pour étudier l'interdépendance entre rituel et espace, plusieurs paramètres doivent être pris en compte : les interactions violentes, les transformations sociales, la communication interculturelle pacifique, la migration de populations nouvelles, l'introduction de nouveaux cultes, la mobilité des groupes ethniques et religieux. L'arc chronologique de cette investigation s'étend de la période hellénistique à l'empire romain, mais quelques exemples tirés des périodes antérieures permettront de compléter le tableau de ce phénomène complexe.
