Apolipoprotein E polymorphism in the Greek population

Abstract: The APOE gene is located on chromosome 19, and the three common alleles are designated ε2, ε3, and ε4. The ε4 allele is associated with increased plasma cholesterol, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease, and decreased longevity. The objective of the present study was to estimate the distribution of APOE alleles in the Greek population by DNA analysis. The material consisted of 216 voluntary, healthy Greek blood donors (146 males/70 females). The APOE allele frequencies were ε2: 5.3%,… Show more

“…Data on APOE allele frequencies collected from literature showed that the APOE allele distributions were different between North and South Europe. Additionally, compared to northern European countries, Mediterranean countries such as Italy, Turkey and Greece had lower frequencies of APOE-ε2 and ε4 alleles [77][78][79].…”

“…The frequency of the ϵ4 allele in Europe parallels the incidence of CHD and other diseases [ 11 , 30 , 31 ]. It follows a north-to-south gradient and ranges from more than 0.22 in Finland and Greenland [ 32 - 34 ] to less than 0.07 in Greece and Italy [ 35 - 37 ]. In our study, the ϵ4 allele frequency (0.10) was similar to values observed in other North African populations (around 0.10 in Moroccan populations [ 26 , 38 ] and around 0.08 in Tunisian populations [ 27 , 28 ]).…”

“…The ApoE3 allele is the most common allele in each population [34]. The ApoE3 allele showed a significantly higher frequency in the PCOS patient group when compared with the control group (p<0.001).…”
