Recent evidence for mitochondrial mutations associated with Alzheimers disease (AD) suggests the possibility of maternal transmission of this illness. We investigated this hypothesis by examining, in a variety of ways, the risk of a primary progressive dementia (PPD) in the parents (n = 650) and siblings (n = 1,220) of 325 AD probands. The results did not support maternal transmission in AD: The mothers of AD probands were not at greater risk of PPD than the fathers or the sisters of AD probands; the offspring of affected mothers were not at greater risk than the offspring of affected fathers or families with no affected parent; and, after selecting those proband families with evidence for increased familial loading, such families did not more frequently have affected mothers than fathers. In contrast, the cumulative risk of PPD in fathers of AD probands, while similar to that of mothers, was significantly increased over the brothers of AD probands. In addition, the cumulative risk curve of PPD in the offspring of affected fathers was significantly higher than the offspring of no affected parents. While no evidence for maternal transmission in AD was observed, unexpectedly, we did find evidence of increased paternal transmission.

The field of behavioral genetics has enormous potential to uncover both genetic and environmental influences on normal and deviant behavior. Behavioral-genetic methods are based on a solid foundation of theories and methods that successfully have delineated components of complex traits in plants and animals. New resources are now available to dissect the genetic component of these complex traits. As specific genes are identified, we can begin to explore how these interact with environmental factors in development. How we interpret such findings, how we ask new questions, how we celebrate the knowledge, and how we use or misuse this knowledge are all important considerations. These issues are pervasive in all areas of human research, and they are especially salient in human behavioral genetics.

I gemelli sono i rappresentanti di un'eccezione biologica della specie umana, di un avvenimento fuori dal consueto, per cui il parto della donna non dà origine ad un nuovo essere, ma a due o più rappresentanti della specie. Questa eccezione è così evidente e caratteristica che non ha mancato, come non manca, di impressionare l'intelligenza e la fantasia dell'uomo presso ogni popolo e in ogni epoca della storia.Anche il sapere medico, prima ancora che si organizzasse in scienza, ha fermato la sua attenzione sul fenomeno della gemellanza cercandone la causa e le applicazioni.Secondo la scienza Talmudica la nascita dei gemelli è dovuta al fatto che una goccia di sperma si è divisa in due parti. Del pari Ippocrate ritiene che il concepimento gemellare avvenga per la bipartizione dello sperma e ciascuna parte penetri in una delle due corna dell'utero. Nell'antichità classica il fenomeno della gemellarità fu riportato al caso delle formazioni doppie dovuto, secondo Empedocle, ad un eccesso dello sperma emesso in una sola volta, dovuto invece, secondo Democrito, allo sperma emesso in più volte, ad ognuna delle quali corrisponderebbe un embrione.Secondo Aristotele invece, le mostruosità doppie «sarebbero originate da un fenomeno di concrescenza per il quale due embrioni, dapprima separati, vengono a fondersi parzialmente, in modo da costituire una sola formazione, nella quale però sono riconoscibili le due componenti».Galeno sembra accettare l'ipotesi di Empedocle, aggiungendo tuttavia che il calore eccessivo dell'utero possa dividere il seme in più parti, donde originerebbe formazioni doppie, triple, ecc… Plinio non aggiunge nulla di nuovo alle idee dominanti e si limita a fornire descrizioni più o meno esaurienti di gravidanze multiple.
