Apoptotic and anti-angiogenic strategies in liver and gastrointestinal malignancies

Abstract: Inappropriate suppression of apoptosis is strongly implicated in tumorigenesis. Tumor development is heralded by the mutation of tumor suppressor genes and overexpression of anti-apoptotic genes permitting cell survival. Thus, inducing the apoptotic process in various ways can be applied to cancer management. Besides, angiogenesis is a crucial process for tumor growth and metastasis. New strategies targeting fundamental play-markers of the angiogenic process are currently under investigation.

“…16,17 Our data displayed in this paper demonstrated that PDCD5, an apoptosisassociated protein, was significantly decreased in gastric tumors. Interestingly, the decreased PDCD5 expression was well correlated with the increased expression of Bcl-2 protein (p = 0.018).…”

“…The inhibition of survivin has been demonstrated to be an effective molecular target therapy in the treatment of a variety of cancers, such as lung [38], breast [39], liver [40], pancreatic [41], oesophageal [42], colon [43] and prostatic [44] cancers. In recent years, molecular target therapy using survivin inhibition has been applied in the treatment of gastric cancer.…”

“…Several reports have demonstrated survivin expression in the majority of human tumor types including lung, breast, colon, gastric, oesophageal, pancreatic, liver, bladder, uterine and ovarian cancers, leukaemias, neuroblastoma, brain tumors, pheochromocytoma, soft tissue sarcomas, melanomas and other skin cancers [38][39][40][41][42] .…”
