Appearance of fetal intestinal obstruction on fetal MRI

Abstract: Objective: To retrospectively analyze the imaging findings of fetal intestinal obstruction diagnosed by MRI and compare with postnatal surgery findings. Methods: MRI data of 3346 pregnant women were retrospectively analyzed; we found 47 cases of suspected fetal small intestinal obstruction. Twenty-nine underwent postnatal surgery. Results: We identified one case of jejunal obstruction secondary to perforation, five annular pancreas, 10 duodenal stenoses, four jejunal stenoses, five jejunal atresias, two ileal … Show more

“…The potential benefit of prenatal MRI in digestive tract dilatations has been discussed in the literature 32–36 . MRI was performed in 54 of our cases (42.5%), confirming the postnatal diagnosis in 37 cases and giving additional information in 19 cases, mainly in specifying the level of obstruction and describing the bowel loops downstream of the obstruction 32–36 .…”

“…Some centres are increasingly using MRI as well as ultrasound to investigate abnormal fetal kidneys (52,53). This improves diagnostic to 94% versus 85% for ultrasound, but this was not statistically significant and only conferred a diagnostic advantage when ultrasound was technically challenging due to maternal habitus or fetal position (52,53).…”
