Appendiceal Neuroendocrine Tumours in Childhood

Abstract: Reported data and our experience showed that no relapse or death occurred in children and adolescents affected by appendiceal NETs. Appendectomy alone should be considered curative for most patients, and a more aggressive surgical approach is warranted in the cases with incompletely excised tumours.

“…CgA or 5-HIAA) nor indirect noninvasive imaging have been studied for their sensitivity for detecting metastasis or local tumor recurrence in this specific setting. Cumulative exposure to irradiation with repetitive scanning may be an argument to use MRI rather than CT scanning in younger and particularly in fertile patients (female or male) [45]. The role of colonoscopy or transabdominal ultrasound has not been established in this setting and is not recommended.…”

“…Cross-sectional imaging using CT or MRI with modern protocols should be used to rule out locoregional or distant metastasis [42,43,44,45]. NEN limited to the appendix may be detected by transabdominal ultrasonography, which in spite of its investigator-dependent limitations is the least invasive procedure but has not been validated.…”

“…In addition, the TREP and EXPeRT groups have developed treatment and staging recommendations for selected rare cancers and have identified a group of experts who assist in consultations and clinical decisions. 2,[7][8][9][10] The EUROCARE (European Cancer Registry) project, a population-based cancer database that reports the survival rates from 74 population-based registries in 29 European countries, has also served as an important resource for investigators and offers opportunities for improved collaboration.…”

“…To locate the primary tumour site and assess the disease stage, SRI in correlation with multiphase CT/MRI is recommended. In the case of incomplete surgery of the NEN of the appendix or if distant metastases are suspected, SRI should be performed [67].…”
