Appetitive responses to computer-generated visual stimuli by the praying mantisSphodromantis lineola(Burr.)

Abstract: Tethered adult female praying mantises, Sphodromantis lineola (Burr.), were presented with various computer-generated visual stimuli that moved against patterned or homogeneous white backgrounds in predetermined patterns and at predetermined speeds. The degrees to which the stimulus configurations elicited appetitive behaviors (attempting to approach and/or striking) indicated the relative degrees to which the stimuli were classified as prey. Mantises readily struck at cartoon “crickets” that subtended visual … Show more

“…In behavioral experiments, the mantis frequently strikes a small moving block (Iwasaki, 1990;Prete, 1990) or a small moving square generated on a computer display (Prete and Mahaffey, 1993;Prete and McLean, 1996). This behavioral size-preference coincides with the spatial tuning of the SF neurons.…”

“…Alternatively, the light-dark-associated bursts of activity could be associated with vespertine relocation of foraging sites. This explanation may be plausible in that there is a positive correlation between hunger level and locomotor activity level in the field (Matsura and Inoue, 1999), and in our experiments, mantises were fed a diet known to keep them healthy but slightly hungry (Prete and Mahaffey, 1993;Prete, 1999;Prete et al, 2011).…”

“…Visual perception has been studied in a variety of animals, from primates (Britten et al, 1992;Gescheider, 1997;Valois, 1974), to insects (Plateau, 1888;Hassenstein, 1951;Horridge et al, 1992;Prete and Mahaffey, 1993;Prete et al, 2002) and spiders (Duelli, 1978;Land, 1971). Despite work spanning over a century, most studies have only addressed perception in a single sex.…”
